I agree with the first guy to comment.
“ This is one of the absolute best articles on English/Latakia blends I've read...maybe ever.”
I love Samuel Gawith’s Balkan Flake. And as everyone is quick to say “It isn’t a Balkan blend because it has no orientals” , a reviewer contacted SG about it, and learned it's called a Balkan flake because the virginia originates from the Balkans.
I haven’t seen that stuff on the market forever. I have a lone tin from 2014

It’s been on my list for a while.

That's really interesting. It made me wonder, since Latakia tends to fade with age, if "English" blends can become "Balkan" blends over time, or at least more Balkan than before.

Although some people lament the fact that aged Latakia tends to fade the blend, Pipestud will be the first to say that they command the highest prices. Case in point, old Balkan Sobranie.

I can get it at the storage unit because the last time those big boxes showed up I bought some at S@P.com. Here of late GLP Blackpoint is the star of show and he has his own thoughts on what makes a English, Balkan or Scottish blend. Your fifty bucks was well spent that works out to ten dollars a tin.

Just have to order a crapload to make the $80 shipping worth it. Or divvy it up in a group buy with some buddies. It would be nice if they did free shipping a few times per year like Mr. Snuff does.

A while ago, out of curiosity, I bought a small quantity of “Blending Latakia” from P&C. (BGM-TB, 1-ounce). The other day on a lark I added a tiny pinch to a pipe-load of Z92 and mixed it up well. Wow! It really changes things. Takes only a wee bit to completely change the pipe-load. Dark. Smoky. Robust. With just the tiniest little hint of bite working on the back of the tongue, but well handleable. I’m really sensitive to tongue-bite so if I can handle it I think anybody could. An interesting experiment...

If we are blending, then semois, other variants like katsuri really push a balkan into a good place by my tastes. My latest find has been SPC potlatch left over from breaking in the new pete107 with,,,you guessed it, semois.. I should get a tattoo of manil with all this fan service...lol its just a burley after all but a burley grown in a place that changes it. I call it the "cuban" of pipe tobaccos. But it pushed that potlatch into a fruity tart profile neither component had before.. Being a daily multi bowl smoker, sugar is my bane so balkans drew me in quickly. Balkan sasieni got a bit bitter over time, sobranie never was in stock and I almost got some super balkan this past tobacco order. Of course once I found orientals it got kinda crazy.
