I was just enjoying a wonderful bowl of this, from the final ounce of my only tin, and wondering if there are any acceptable substitutes?

Maybe one of these? Missing 26. Seriously though, from what I have read that people with more refined palates than I have say that there really isn't substitutes for McClellands. Maybe someone familiar with another blend comprised of Orientals, Turkish, and (Matured) Virginia leaf can check in. www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/782/mcclelland-no-24

Yeah, not a dumb question. I just don't know anything. Me, either, but I was hoping for suggestions!

I don't know anything about #24. Maybe I had some in my previous piping life, but I don't remember it, so I have no basis for comparison. Rattray's does have some very good Virginias, though.

That's a fair enough answer. I didn't realize 24 had much other than good ol' straight VA.

I have to admit, until you posted on a replacement, I never recalled looking into the components of #24 although I smoked plenty. Just to add on the Oriental Drama leaf that is a component: www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/2937/mcclelland-drama-reserveThat alone makes one feel like it is all like chasing a unicorn with a golden horn. Especially with the proprietary practices of McClellands and the sourcing of other leaf that they acquired and sat on for years. But there is fun in the race. I hope you find something to scratch that itch.

I am told that KBV has purchased McClellands remaining leaf stock ) or some of it). Don't know if he has anything like #24, but worth a looksee.

Maybe I'll post this question over in his preferred forum and see what happens. He certainly has some odd leaf that he pulls out every now and then....like today at noon Eastern.

Awesome link Charlie and thank you! I’ve tried both Opening Night and Sunday Picnic (in fact, just finished a bowl) and both are great blends. Looking forward to trying out the other blends mentioned in the article.👍

I found Simply Red to be very boring. Nothing against Ernie - I like almost all of his other blends - but this one just doesn't hit any of the right palate spots for me personally, especially with all the other great straight VA's out there. 558 is fantastic and Rhythm & Blues wasn't far behind. On another forum someone recommended Ramback Gold, which I thought was strange when I read its components.

One of our pipe club members suggested GL Pease Cairo, it has Virginia's and Oriental, but it does also have Perique.

One of the Rattrays seems to have been close. Hal o Wynd or Old Growie. Been so long I can't recall which one it was. My #24 was aged over 5 years though. Hell, maybe it was Marlin Flake. HAH

After rereading the post, and rereading the Chuck Stanion article linked: I broke out a tin of this at a pipe club meeting in the last year or so, Beacon was never on my radar (No pun intended) until Darin said that it was one of his favorites. But that tin evaporated and everyone was pretty happy to smoke a bowl, myself included.
Color me Gollum going forward on this one.

Give C&D Bijou and GLP Embarcadero a try. They aren’t matches but are close neighbors of #24. I recommend a minimum of 12 months of age for both.

Don't know if he has anything like #24, but worth a looksee. 😂😂😂 Buying leaf stock is buying leaf and not processed, finished blends. Any #24 that Mike made was tinned and sold. Mike also ran out of red Va, a key component of #24. Even if all the component leaf still existed, nobody could take that leaf and make something that tastes like a McC blend due to the unique way that Mike processed his blends.
