Since this is legislation that negatively affects every member of the forum, I am guessing that it is appropriate to post here. A 1,650% increase on pipe tobacco would pretty much relegate us to talking about the good old days when we could afford tobacco.
Thanks to Spartacus for mentioning this to the pipe club.

glad to do so & sure others will do same. Can only hope that putting the hi-lited link to "favorites" is same thing as putting it in browser. So far haven't attempted do follow the directions but will do so hopefully tonite before the chat.
We have no teener whiz-bangs around here to assist in the moves to make. Might turn out the only way is have somebody come to the house, sit at desk & do it while I write down the step by step moves to make in case something similar shows up.

...and this is why we told you to cellar now and not wait for some bargain down the road. Indeed, wise words. But don’t throw in the towel because you have a nice cellar. Had the generation before us had been faced with the same problem and said “to hell with it, I am good”, we wouldn’t have cellars. I know that isn’t what you are saying, Walt. Just food for thought.

Indeed, Charlie. The newer people coming to pipe smoking have a long way to go and this type of draconian stuff will handicap everyone.

I always sucked at math.
If some old wise buzzard on the forum could calculate what the current taxation is on a tin of say.... Escudo. Add the 1650% increase on the tax for pipe tobacco.
I wonder what a tin would cost?
I asked mister owl, he told me to kiss his feathered butt.

I was wondering the same thing, but I don't think I've ever seen what the tobacco tax cost on anything is when I've made purchases. It's already built into the tobacco price, I guess.

$10 @ 10% tax = $11 A 1650% increase puts the tax at $17.50 So, around $27.50 for the same tin. Someone check my math!

Darin just achieved old buzzard status.😝
Thanks for doing the work, but I thought a 1,650% increase would be stratospherically higher.

Submitted my opposition to it As did I, having a cellar doesn't mean I like the idea of more taxes.

A big problem is that the majority of the population are either neutral or against tobacco use. That being said, I jumped ship once most of my favorites went above $3/ounce. Tobacco is already above what I'm willing to pay for it though I managed to amass a lifetime supply prior to it being out of my reach.

No, this is way worse than you think. Poor folk would be slaughtered, because the cheapest tobaccos would go up the most. A 1650% increase in Federal tax would add about $5 bucks to a tin, but about $46 bucks to a pound. Add $5 bucks to a $12 dollar tin and it's $17 dollars, doesn't sound too bad, but add $46 dollars to a $50 dollar pound of Luxury Navy Flake and it's now $96 bucks. Add $46 bucks to a $12 dollar one pound bag of Gambler Red and it would go up to $58 dollars. If all you can afford is Gambler Red, you get screwed. My numbers are from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau of the Treasury at www.ttb.gov/tax-audit/tax-and-fee-rates: Federal pipe tobacco tax is $0.1769 per ounce, and goes up a bit for a pound at $2.8311. Federal tax on a 1.76oz tin is 31¢ (0.1769*1.76 = 0.311344). Multiply this by 1650% and it goes up to $5.14 (0.1769*1650% = $5.137176). The $2.8311 current tax on a pound would go up to $46 bucks (2.8311*1650% = 46.71315).

Quick math correction, dadgummit. The formula for getting the $5 bucks per tin is 0.311344*1650%, not 0.1769*1650%.
Just the formula was wrong, the answers are the same: add $5 per tin, and $46 per pound.
A tin of Escudo would go from $14 to $19, but a $12 dollar pound of cheap tobacco would have $46 in taxes added, so screw poor people.

Wait...then state taxes would be taken as % of retail price after the fed tax? Pretty slick.

I don't know, but state taxes vary a great deal, from the lowest I saw at 2% or something, to one state that had them at 95%. Again, screw poor people.
It's a pain to wade through all the links that list cigarette taxes to find the pipe tobacco numbers.
The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau of the Department of the Treasury's numbers are official though: $0.1769 per ounce, and $2.8311 for a pound.
