Just wondering what everyone thinks about this. I have a few times floating around, the type with the plastic top like C&D and GL Pease use, that seem to have swollen over the years. Specifically, the bottoms of the tins and the top, where the pull tab is. I suspect that they were not kept in climate controlled areas the entire time. Is the tobacco inside still worth saving or smoking? Or has the climate control issue potentially ruined these?

My swollen tins have all been great ... a sign of the fermentation inside. 👍😎

Often, the bloated tin is a result of tobacco aging wonderfully, and the Pull tab container is just getting stretched. That same tobacco aging in a mason jar can send the lid shooting across the room.
It can be compromised tobacco’s, both C&D and Pease blends have had issues with mold. Most notably with C&D has been red Virginia blends, and with Pease, Temple Bar I remember hearing about, but a few others also. C&D tins GLP also.
I have seen a few bloated tins posted online that were moldy, others were moldy and not bloated.
I am betting more the former than the latter though.

Thanks guys. The main one doing is a 2015 Sixpence. Now I'm thinking maybe it's like a turkey timer. Lol.

When I said the former rather than the latter meant I bet it is wonderfully aged and not moldy. All of my bloated tins were fine.

Oh, that's botulism. Very bad stuff, that. I'll dispose of them properly for you if you like. Really, they should be fine. I recently had a stack of GLP and C&D topple to the floor in the midle of the night. Several tins had slowly gotten . Enjoy.

If the swelling lasts more than 4 hours, consult your doctor.

Yeah, and you, most likely, are gonna be real happy with the results.

I would be tempted to take it outside for opening. Just in case it is mold, no need to scatter mold spores inside the house.

That’s what happened last time my wife was pregnant. I told her to stop complaining, she’d be fine once the swelling went down. Then It took about a week for my own swelling to subside.

I must be even "stranger" than most know I already am. Been smoking pipe/cigars since '62, many C&D + few other brands when same is mentioned. Never once have had that problem. Sympathy to all those who've had it happen
Ed Duncan, Batavia, NY maybe just lucky

When I pulled the tab, I was in olfactory heaven. It really delivered the goods.

I have a tin of Frog Morton on the Town from 08 or 09 that's swelling nicely, some Mountain Camp and Gates of light from the same era are also rounded over...it's just gas building up from the ageing process; I'm looking forward to some tasty smokes, or some profitable trades.

I keep all my tobacco in my basement, where the temperature is normally 65-70 degrees all year round. Some of my older tins have swelled, Virginia blends for the most part. Off-gassing is just a part of tobacco aging.
As far as mold, that's just the nature of the beast when it comes to tobacco, and it can occur with any vendor. Most vendors will replace tins that have mold if they were kept sealed.
I haven't run across a moldy tin in decades.

I cracked it. The suspense was killing me. This and a jar of ODF were the oldest things in my tiny cellar. I see no indication of mold, moisture content seems about the same as a fresh tin, but the scent has definitely smoothed over a bit. Got some laid out for the morning.

Let us know how it tastes. I really like Six Pence and have a few of the 8 oz. cans. I don't know if I can sit on these for 5 or 6 years (unless I buy more).

There was a very satisfying hiss when I opened this up last night, as the gases escaped.
Definitely better behaved than I remember it being, the VAs seem to have smoothed out nicely, bringing the perique more to the front. I'm no good at picking out specific notes and such, but I will say that I found myself standing outside of the office for a few extra minutes when I arrived this morning, trying to finish off every last puff.

If the tin is aged, then technically it's a good sign. I see it happening on some of the Rattray 100g tins I have. If the swelling happens when the tin is young, then there's trouble. Big trouble, probably mold.

Big trouble, probably mold. This ^^^^^^^^^ If a tin swells young it’s a bad sign towards mold. However, mold is a very rare occurrence and gets talked about enough that it would seem that it’s a common occurrence. It is not. Swelling over time, especially a few years, is a sign that tasty wonderful aging is churning away inside that tin. The only downside is that it can make it hard to stack tins on the shelf.

It's simply pride...
When a tin senses that a blend is entering the great maturation phase, around the birthing point, the tin swells with great pride and joy... Begging for someone to come and open her up to allow her baby to breath and be consumed, she waits in eager anticipation. Anticipation that can lead to the tin becoming so excited that it bursts open, spreading love and joy, at least that is what the tin believes, for all to enjoy and gawk in awe....
Or so I have been told...
