On JD and Beau's latest podcast they addressed the closing of McClelland's, and from where I am sitting I think they are spot on.
Cliffnotes:
When McClelland's closed it was blamed on the unavailability to procure the leaf in order to meet the standards of the McClelland line of tobacco's and there probably has some truth to that.
Prior to McClelland's closing the doors, when the tobacconist JD (country Squire Jackson Ms.) contacted them about leaf availability, when he was not able to procure leaf for blending, he was assured for months that they were working on it. He was then blindsided by the announcement of the closing...after several months, through knowing people in the industry, it wasn't a problem with sourcing the leaf at all. It is more about the processing the leaf that there was no desire to share or sell. And insiders in the factory admitted that up to a year before it was common knowledge that the doors were going to be closed.
What I know personally:
The property that McClelland's was produced in had risen stratospherically in value, Mary is older than Mike, Mike has a bad back, and I think that they were just tired and wanted to enjoy the fruits of their labor. On that note I cannot blame them, some times it is good to cash in the chips and enjoy life.
They were offered big $$$ by Mister Big in the tobacco industry to sell the proprietary information, and there was no desire to sell.
I like Mike, have spoken with him a few times at. He can be off putting and overly cocky, but he is brilliant and prideful of what he has produced in regards to our hobby. I have met several people in several industries who have been cocky about their abilities, and I am not offended by them, some times that is just an attitude expressed by someone that has a lot of self confidence. But, I can see someone like that preferring to not allow anyone else to ride on his accomplishments.
There was a publicly stated request by JD and Beau for the McNeil's to re-think selling the proprietary practices to others. But, from where I am sitting, in regards to the governmental Deeming rules, that ship has long sailed. I don't think that there is any chance a company could come into compliance...the timing is awful.
That is the way I see it, this will definitely ruffle feathers and see people take sides. JD and Beau have been accused of having private knowledge of the impending closing of McClelland's and have spent several months in attempting to assure others that they were blindsided also, so they used this venue to make their case.
