I'm sure this has been covered before, I'm relatively new to the site, so I apologize if I'm plowing old ground. Have a couple pipes -- a GBD and a BBB -- where the tenon doesn't fit into the mortise. Is it advisable to lightly sand the tenon? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Are you sure the base of the mortise isn't full of gunk? There's usually a little gap that collects the gunk. Just don't force anything or you'll break off the tenon or crack the shank.

Pictures might help. I echo davinlax, be careful. Shanks like to snap crackle and pop.

In conjunction with what Dave said, give the mortice a good cleaning before doing anything. Then look at next steps.

I agree with what has been said. There was a pipe restoration guy "George D " i think posted something along these lines a while ago.

George is the best pipe restorer I know. He worked miracles on the grandfather's 1936 Dunhill several years ago.

If the mortise is clean you might try some beeswax or graphite on the tenon and slip it in.

Some people will sand the tenon in order to make it fit, but I would not. Too easy to remove too much material, or end up with misshapen tenon. Cleaning out the mortise, as was already described, is the first place to start. The join on new pipes can be quite tight also. I usually let them sit for a few weeks to let them acclimate to the atmosphere where I live. Then hit the tenon with some carnauba wax on a buffing wheel. Having to push too hard to get it in there, especially when the shank is rather thin, will usually end up cracking the shank. Absent mindedly did that with an old Moulin Rouge. If you are not comfortable doing the work yourself, then take it to a good pipe repair guy. I'm fortunate have one nearby. I use him for making stems, since I don't have the expertise to do good job with rod stock.

Intended to post this earlier. Had a lot of work to do on both these pipes in addition to fitting the tenon. Alls well, as you can see. Let them sit to acclimate for a bit, used a little beeswax and voila. Thanks for your help.
