With most cuts of tobacco -- ribbon, flake, coin, plug, etc -- I do just fine. However, shags have me stumped. I've avoided them in the past, but I've discovered that I like both Kendal Kentucky and Kendal Gold. I've tried different methods of filling the pipe, ranging from "almost no pressure" to "lots of pressure," but it still takes half a dozen lights to get the stuff going. Once it's going, it smokes just fine, but it's really annoying to have to hit it with the lighter so many times. Is there a trick I'm missing?

More dry time, it sounds like to me.

Pack the load a little tight, give it a good char light, let it rest for a half hour or so allowing for the shag expansion to settle, then tamp it down just to the point of resistance... Time now for a relaxed smoke

Careful about getting it too dry. It breaks into dust quickly. Following Baboo'suggestion of letting it rest also will dry it some once it's packed--so you're not handling it.
And usually I like my stuff very dry.

I have also had this problem with a KBV blend. Thank you for the advice.

The issue is very simple. It's the tobacco's moisture level that is most likely too high. That explains the multiple lighting up attempts. Sometimes, the tobacco feels dry to the touch but it's not. I've learned a trick a few years back that works well and has never failed me. Take a pinch between your fingers and squeeze it gently. If the tobacco still holds together after 6 or 7 seconds, it's very moist and will prove problematic to smoke. Even if it holds for 4 or 5 seconds before it starts collapsing apart, it's too moist. When it starts collapsing within just a few seconds (and I really mean 1 or 2 seconds), the moisture level is low and it will smoke just fine. One thing about tobacco that is too moist is even though the tobacco's aroma will be very perceptible the flavors will not unveil themselves very much. It's once the moisture level is lower that you will be able to taste the tobacco a lot more, even if its aroma has decreased. That is simply because a high level of moisture requires repetitive lightings, harder and more frequent puffing to keep lit and generates a lot more moisture while smoking. Things kind of go south very quickly under these conditions. A minimal moisture level will attenuate all the requirements and not only make the flavors shine but also make the smoking experience much more pleasant.

To your point qmechanics I'm pretty sure that Elizabeth Hurley there would've constituted a "smokin' shag"...

At a previous job, my shop steward pulled out a pouch of Peter Stokkebye Amsterdam shag and rolled his own cigarettes, so I asked for a bowl of it. It was a pleasant smoke. 4noggins.com/products/peter-stokkebye-amsterdam-shag-150gI just saw this disclaimer on the 4 Noggins website, I wonder what the deal is with that?:

ROLL YOUR OWN CAN ONLY BE SHIPPED OUTSIDE THE USA. PLEASE REMOVE THESE PRODUCTS FROM YOUR CART TO CONTINUE CHECKING OUT.

PLEASE REMOVE THESE PRODUCTS FROM YOUR CART TO CONTINUE CHECKING OUT. I am guessing that once it becomes cigarette tobacco, the online retailer is subject to the differing laws from each individual state and compliance with different laws in different states is a nightmare. I know that Arizona is hardcore on online cigarette purchases, they want their slice of the pie and will go after retailer and consumer.

Amsterdam comes as a "Pipe Cut" that's readily available. Same tobacco as a ribbon cut.

The regulations and taxes on different tobacco forms are pretty bizarre and don't represent sensible public health policy, which ostensibly are the reasons for them. Same tune.

If it was about "The science" they would look at the leaf, processing, etc...Intellectual honesty walked out the door, when follow the money walked in.
