There is a lot of chatter on the interwebs about the scarcity of ammo, and it is true, But, if you walk into your local gun dealer looking for ammo, don't be surprised if they tell you they are out of stock. If you buy something else other than ammo and ask about buying ammo don't be surprised if they have it on hand.
Gun stores need to have ammo on hand when someone buys a gun....if they just sold ammo to everyone that walks in, they would have their stocks depleted within minutes of the shipments arriving.

Yep! I have plenty of ammo myself, but with the lack of availability I am holding off on shooting much to replenish what I have. I got my Hellcat back today with the upgraded Apex trigger and Apex extractor, dry firing it feels like a finely tuned Swiss watch, when the wife gets home we have a range day to practice teamwork and to give it the functionality test for everyday carry.... and to dial in the Viridian laser.

If you had plenty, you could go shooting whenever you wanted to. You have the minimum, so you have to hold off on shooting until you can replenish it

From an article in The Reload, manufacturers are expecting the ammo shortage to last for years yet, as they're still working through several year's worth of existing orders. Brett Flaugher, president of Winchester Ammunition, told The Reload. “For those who shoot 9mm and 5.56 ammunition, which are both in high demand, it’s very uncertain how long it will be before people will consistently have ammunition readily available.” “I’m looking at two and a half years’ worth of demand already on order,” Jason Hornady, vice president of Hornady Manufacturing Company, told The Reload. “So, I’m not seeing a slowdown for two and a half years.” There are more explanations for why demand is so high, and why prices are so high, in the article. thereload.com/manufacturers-say-ammo-shortage-will-stretch-out-for-years/

Prices have actually come down about 50% in the past month. 9mm is < 50c. Production is going full speed. But with all the new shooters, ccl's AND the hoarders (exact same situation as pipe tobacco) ammo isn't plentiful, yet.
We, as pipe smokers are experts at locating hard to find stock. It's not hard to do, just need to scaur the interweb. If you want 1,000 rounds, as long as it's cool in your State it will be at your door next week.

I had started building up an inventory of both ammo and reloading components - so when this shortage hit, I was in good shape compared to most, but only about half of what I planned to get to.
I've been allowed to buy 1 box of 50 rounds of 9mm each time I go to the gun range. They have a limited supply for their patrons. It comes to 50 cents a round.
And last week I noticed they had 5.56mm, so I bought 5 boxes (20 rounds each box) at $12 a box - 60 cents per round. A pretty good price. I'll buy another 100 rounds next time I'm in - probably Tuesday - if they still have any.
Need to do an inventory to see exactly how much ammo I actually have.

I might be going back to Black Powder.
Charcoal, Bat shite, sulphur are in good supply. Caps are an issue, I have some on hand.
I sold my Colt Heritage Walker years ago so now I must find another gunpiece. Thinking of a Remington Model of 1858 or a Colt Navy in .36.
I gave up on the Mossberg Autoloader. They do not handle Black Powder very well... or so I am told.

In metallic cartridge ammo, I have a few boxes for each of my few guns. The most on hand is .44 Magnum.
I noticed the clerk on the gun counter at Big R Store in Alamosa only sells ammunition to those people he knows. He is worse than a bartender in a Fern Bar. He ignores everyone else. I guess I have to slip him a $20 bill to purchase ammo. LOL!

Our family shoots cowboy action competitions and we have had to seriously tone down the number of shoots we attend because of the component shortage. I reload for all four of us, to the tune of 6000 rounds a season. We usually travel two to three states away but are limiting ourselves to our local matches only. That should allow us to shoot three years on a "normal" years supply. I usually order 20000 primers every summer to reload over the winter (not just our cowboy guns, but our to feed our USPSA guns and the occasional 3 gun matches as well). Sadly, I haven't seen a new box of primers come into my reloading room since Auguat of 2019.
