Makes one wonder about Gawith Hoggarth/Samuel Gawith and Germain etc....this may be a death knell to them all. We're set to lose these iconic bastions of tobacco as we did McClelland but for different reasons.
My new focus is to cellar and collect tobacco. Pipes will be laying all over the place like rifles on a battlefield...it's the bullets one wants to have on hand to load the rifles with!!

All this hysteria is both concerning and amusing. Prohibition begets crime and corruption, and is inevitably doomed to failure, because prohibition laws are unenforceable. What? Do you mean to tell me that the constabulary are going to bust a guy camping out in the Scottish highlands for lighting up his pipe, while sitting peacefully by his campfire?

Outdoor smoking banned in Northumberland! What would Uhtred think?
We need to remember that we are citizens while they are subjects and remind our government in the process.

Governments, like all institutions, are organisms. Their root DNA lies in totalitarianism, and it is triggered by numbers. The more people, the more control the organism feels it must exert. Its greatest con is "this is good for you." Closely followed by "our greatest task is to keep you safe." Behind the sugared words lies sheer brute force.

I hoped we wouldn't see this happening for a LONG time. I assume it'll start in public places like parks etc. as opposed to your own back garden.

Yeah but in the end the big bad government is going to be paying the bills for your lifestyle choices. I find so many people hate the government until they need a handout. If smoking were put up to a vote we’d lose.

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." That "Safety" is merely an illusion with a seismic forthcoming sucker punch

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." Hardly in the same league, but good point.

Glad that I made choices early in life and decided that dependency on the government really sucks. I learned early on as a military brat that when I was suffering with a compound fracture, military rank allowed a Major Burns (Think M*A*S*H) type of guy to get medical attention for an ingrown toenail ahead of me. My mom, a first sergeant's wife was pissed...but RHIP (Rank Has It's Privileges) has always been the case in governmental affairs. The ruling class in DC along with their scrubs in the media will always denigrate people that choose lifestyle choices that engage in smoking and elevate others that engage in a much more dangerous lifestyle choice.
I am glad that my future will not result in rattling a tin cup to a greasy politician for my healthcare needs, or those of my wife.

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." Hardly in the same league, but good point. A good quote, and often mis-applied. It would probably surprise some folks that Franklin was actually writing in favor of the power of government. It is, as this analysis explains, actually a pro-taxation and pro-defense-spending quote; affirming the power of government to tax and spend. www.npr.org/2015/03/02/390245038/ben-franklins-famous-liberty-safety-quote-lost-its-context-in-21st-centuryAnyway, I thought that was interesting. As far as smoking laws go, I'm not supporting them but I'm curious: the way I read the new laws, they basically ban smoking in public areas, parks, within a distance of building entries etc... so pretty much what we've had in the U.S. for quite a while? Or are there more extreme facets to it? Certainly if it extended to restricting what people could do on their own property that would be ridiculous.

Unfortunately, I would hazard a guess that plans are afoot to extend the U.S. laws to be all inclusive, and that those in other locations will follow suit.

So. With all this potential "threat" based information what should we do to secure our future and the futures of our hobbies? I wonder if we will all be tucked away in a basement somewhere clam baking just to keep the dream alive. If one could call that the dream, I dont.

In a not too distant podcast, Brian Levine of pipesmagazine had Brian Buczek on, and it was discussed that the legislation is making Its way through Congress. It does not bode well for us. Pipe tobacco is more than likely going to be taxed like cigarettes, and you can expect a tin to cost $8.00 or more with the new taxes. open.spotify.com/episode/78DC6WkEIkW6PfdH10Y9amIf you have discretionary income to cellar tobacco, and keep thinking that you need to put more away, there is no better time than the present.
