It would have been nice for us to be included in the amicus brief, the same argument pertains to pipe tobacco.....I guess we are the red headed stepchild in the battle? I am a CRA member and I think premium cigars will get some kind of exclusion but unfortunately most "pipe tobacco" sold is relabeled roll your own cigarette tobacco and I don't expect any regulatory love and I expect that big tobacco will be demanding tax parity for "pipe tobacco" sometime very soon. Ever since Altadis sold Sutliff to Mac Baren we lost our only voice in DC. We got a Pipe Show Radio DJ in Brian Levin but we lost our lobbyist Paul Creasy.

Brian Levine left Sutliff. I wonder if he'll continue to do the show and be active with legislation.

I heard the show will go on but my point was when Altadis sold Sutliff to Mac Baren they cut loose Paul and hired Brian and they did not continue the lobbying effort. We lost a very strong, effective voice in DC and we got a DJ.

We lost a very strong, effective voice in DC and we got a DJ. Wow, that really blows. I wish we could have gotten organized to support our own lobbyists.... a simple agreement with retailers and e-tailers in the industry we could have had a "round up" program that raises a lot of money painlessly.

This has been an issue ever since sCHIP went into effect. Pipe tobacco has always been the proverbial sheep being led to slaughter and much of the pipe tobacco community just sat back and said "No, not us, we are different". Now, we are a group without a voice, overshadowed by the multi-million dollar cigar industry.
I pray that something will change, but I suspect we will be collateral damage in this regardless of any positive outcome for cigars.

Even if legislators can pick out the "subtle" differences between cigarettes and premium cigars, I doubt they'll be able to distinguish between pipe tobacco and RYO for the purposes of any law. The deliberate obfuscation by the RYO industry will be our downfall.

I had an email exchange with Kevin "KIP" Talley some time back, he works at the ICPCR in Federal legislative affairs and I wasn't impressed with what I got back about our representation.
