I met him at my neighbors house in Houston back in the late 70s. He was a regular visitor there. Just an introduction in the front yard, but we liked him. Very pleasant gentleman.

Bob, thanks for the heads up on this! I was drummed out of pipesmagazine on a scorched earth week, so unless it is brought to my attention, I miss some great articles…this one is no exception.
Ron, that is pretty cool.
I believe that in the past, JD from the country Squire podcast said that Shelby Foote used to buy tobacco at the store he now owns.
My appreciation for people like Shelby Foote grows as time goes by. An honest assessment, instead of historical revisionism.
Great article!

Great, Ron. My dad was born the same year as Foote, but died in 2000. From their accents alone my dad and he could have been brothers. Both were old-school gentlemen, something I value very highly these days when there are so few of them left.

Speaking of the uber tobacconist and super nerd duo (with all do respect to Jon and Beau LOL), I think Shelby Foote needs to be considered for one of their heroes of the bowl episodes. I do not recall that he has ever been featured in an episode, mentioned in a couple, but never an episode devoted to his life and how he help shape the pipe smokers image.

He had a brother Horace who I met too as he was also a friend of the neighbor. He wrote the screenplay for To Kill A Mockingbird and the original for Tender Mercies. I had absolutely no idea who he was when he was introduced in 78. If I had known I would have stuttered.

TKAMB is also on the death-list of the Cancel Culture. Took a hint from the Foote article... mixed 1/3 EGR with 2/3 Z92. Makes for a pretty nice smoke.
(BTW, I think it was Horton Foote, not Horace. Close though...)

I have a grandchild on the way, if it is a girl her name will be Scout, my daughter watched TKAMB as a young child in my arms and as soon as she was old enough to read the book, she chose to read it.

When I first read this article, I thought...Damn this guy is good. Chuck Stanion......Chuck Stanion...the name rings a bell but I can't recall. I pulled out an issue of Pipes and tobacco from 2008 today. Chuck Stanion: Editor in Chief. yeah...I guess he knows a thing or two about writing.
