I do not like a wet smoke. I need my tobacco to be pretty dry— maybe not crunchy-crumbly, but close. I have a bowl I put it in from the bag, and a saucer I use to spread it out thin for drying. This morning I had forgotten to lay some out and so put the thin-spread saucer in the MW for 30-seconds. Helped to speed the process. If it's too moist I tend to get tongue bite and various other unpleasantness. Wondering if needing dry tabac is a common condition among us...

But I prefer a dry smoke as well, not a fan of moisture build up in the stem or the amount of relights it usually takes. I've never tried putting tobacco in the MW. Did it seem to affect the taste or anything?

I like mine super dry, so I tend to lay everything out the night prior. I have used the microwave trick a few times. When it first comes out, it doesn't seem dry, but once it cools, the moisture leaves with the heat. Doesn't have much noticable impact on the flavor. You can actually do this in reverse to add moisture also, cover the tobacco with a slightly damp paper towel and zap it for about 15 seconds.

I've been nuking tobacco for years with no ill effects on flavor ... nothing worse than wet pipe tobacco.

I noticed no change in flavor from the MW. In fact, the first bowl from that batch, in the Digby Colossus, was one of the best bowls in quite a while.

Rarely. In the air conditioning it pretty much dries itself. I find that some tobaccos lose flavor if dried too much.

I was just thinking about trying this. Finally picked up a tin of Plum Pudding, and it seems like it would be tasty but it's so darn wet I can't even keep it burning, after an hour of open-air drying. It requires more extreme measures... thanks for the MW recommendation

Interesting... The only tobacco I've ever intentionally dried is the pound of Old Professor, and now it's so bone-dry that I worry I've ruined it. I generally keep an ounce or so of my chosen tobacco in a tri-fold pouch, but even then, I typically have to run a pipecleaner or 2 through every bowl. Maybe I should start putting my tobacco out ahead of time to dry, but that sounds like a lot of planning.

I try to keep 2-3 bowls in the "drying saucer." Works for me.

I have one of those older glass plates that is divided into 3 sections, and one that has 5 sections, the type that are meant for serving veggies and dip or something, that I got at thrift stores for pretty much nothing. They work great and it gives me the ability to have several blends drying at once.

About 15 seconds in the microwave on a plate with a paper towel underneath. It will amaze you how much moisture is in that paper towel! Fire+ water = steam on the tongue. You can go less time in the microwave to figure what works for you, but for most blends a slight crunch delivers for me.

Never tried the mw method before Charlie. I know a few others (Bob etc) have mentioned it too. Might have to give it a try thanks.

Well, 15 seconds in microwave and Plum Pudding still won't burn for me. It just came out warm and damp haha. I did not put a paper towel underneath though. That's a good idea; somewhere for the moisture to go without having to completely evaporate. Next time... 30 seconds!

With our humid summers, I've been using the MW method. 15 seconds and let cool. In the winter, I just put tobacco on a plate for an hour, or so. But that also requires deciding in advance what to smoke.

Then again, my tobacco is stored in my centrally heated house, so drying isn't normally an issue.

I’ve now been officially banned from using the MW to dry my tobacco. My Mrs. wasn’t amused when her food came out tasting like tobacco shortly thereafter.

Toaster oven next? Think I’ll stick to the old fashion way, let it dry naturally on its own Jason. Cheers buddy…….

Motzek Strang smells amazing in the microwave ... Lat blends, not so much! 😄 Bullseye flake smells like brownies. I would just buy another microwave....the cheap ones are very cheap, compact and would do the trick. If you really want to go dirt cheap, there are plenty on the secondhand market. Convenience stores, truck stop microwaves get er done, too.

I have, in all seriousness, actually made a little foil bowl, filled it with tobacco, and used tongs to toast it over a burner on the stove in the past.
