Does anyone know of Hemingway actually
smoked a pipe? I’ve read conflicting things on this but nothing with substance.
Allegedly Hemingway denounced tobacco. But writes about it several times, he’s a couple photos with pipe in mouth, spent much time at cafes where smoking would have been common, and served in a war where tobacco was given out to soldiers. So i’m torn on what to believe. Does anyone have any greater insight?

I've investigated it years ago and the answer was no. In the one picture that was supposed to be proof he was holding something in his hand, but I blew it up and enhanced it and whatever it was, it wasn't a pipe. According to several sources he was a non-smoker.

I’ve never seen a photo of Hemingway with a cigar. Arturo Fuentes had a line named after him though. |

I've investigated it years ago and the answer was no. In the one picture that was supposed to be proof he was holding something in his hand, but I blew it up and enhanced it and whatever it was, it wasn't a pipe. According to several sources he was a non-smoker. So there’s two photos of him where he is definitely holding a pipe. One in a clench the other on his hand. |

Curiosity drove me to duckduckgo. Image section. Where there are many hundreds of pictures of him_ with rifles, pistols, shotguns, Thompsons, every kind of liquor bottle imaginable (some held to his lips), typewriters, cars, jeeps, pencils, pens, notebooks, dead animals, and the list goes on. But only one that “might” be a pipe, held in a way that he seems to be hiding it in his fist. No real way to tell WHAT it is. SInce pipe-smoking celebrities are almost ALWAYS photographed with their pipes I am inclined to think that he was not a pipe smoker.
[Just as a follow-up I looked at Faulkner pictures. Twelve images in the first two rows, in which eight of them show him with his pipes.]

I've read a couple of biographies that mentioned nothing about pipe smoking.

Regardless of any pictures, he didn't smoke. This is what I figured. I had heard the photo of him clenching the pipe was more just for fun. |

A few months back it seems PBS had a documentary on Hemingway, I get the impression from the article that it was a Ken Burns production. That would have been a good one to watch. As a life long Hemingway fan, part of me didn't want to keep reading, but as a adult with a lot of mileage it certainly was enlightening. |

very true, interesting what the lense of experience and time will do to our perception. I'm not a fan of the man anymore, understanding some of what troubled him, but some of his work is still outstanding. |

Obviously you know what you like. And the more you know about Hemingway the man the harder it is to like him, whatever you think of his works. But all artists are flawed, some more deeply than others. He is in a downturn now, and has been for quite a while. Doesn't help that he is seen as a role model for "toxic masculinity." If literary pendulae can be relied upon, he will be back— in about 50 years. |

Spending some time with his biography, I understand some the issues that perhaps enhanced some of his character flaws. |
