My first pipe was a meerschaum from that I moved onto excellent condition estate briars
about 2 weeks ago I decided to take the plunge and attempt a Cob - ordered a Missouri Meer Volcano
what I found was a very 'snug' smoke (boy was that a tight bowl) that was quite flavorful but lacking in experience I put it down and don't really anticipate picking it up much other than for a trial of a funky blend
what's your take on cobs?

love mine. I haven't tried a MM Volcano, but my Country Gentleman is hard to beat for me.

I have five diplomats, a Country Gent, a George Washington, and two Legends. For some reason the Legends and the G.W. are packed away somewhere. The others have their own rack and stand ready when needed. I'm mostly a briar guy, but some tobaccos taste better in a cob.

The volcano is news to me. I do love my cobs, though, so maybe I should try one. I already have more MM pipes than I care to mention, but they're small, they don't eat much, and I take them out every day.

I like my MacArthur, when I’m in the mood for it. Such as, when watching a movie. Dang thing burns for hours (it seems) and produces a good smoke, too. I like ‘em.

The smoke is good - the flavor is good - but there was something lacking can't quite put the finger on it

They take a few bowls to get broken in.

Need more than 3 bowls....I have 12 of them and love them...smoke them almost more than the briars.

Among the best smoking pipes that I own. They are my workhorses. My Dunhills, Charatan's, Upshalls...must be feeling a little lonely.

Regardless of what we think, you have to figure out what works for you - and what you like. If you decide the MM isn't for you, I'm sure you'll have no problem moving it ;-)

My go to lately is either a cob or a meer. To the point I’m debating selling my briars.

Charlestown cobbler, country gentleman, and the emerald are all ones I prefer. Little bit bigger pipe. And I usually take the filters out if they have one.

Four MMs. Used primarily to try new tobaccos or the few Aro's I like.

I have around a dozen cobs, love em. I'll echo others, they take breaking in. A well smoked cob is always better than a fresh one.

ok, I just had my 5th bowl in a new cob, and it is now starting to get right. Light cake all the way down, burned an aromatic to fine white/grey ash. Outstanding smoke. you'll have to decide if it is worth it to keep trying. Best of luck!

My go to lately is either a cob or a meer. To the point I’m debating selling my briars. that's quite a big statement - like I said I began on a meer which I love BUT there's something I truly desire about a briar - I'm no purist but a briar to me is a perfect smoking device

When broken in, cobs are amazing especially when smoking in cold weather and worried about your briar. It’s my go-to now. 👍

I have about 185 briar and Meershaum pipes, and about 15 cobs. The cobs get smoked out of proportion to the count. I especially like them for aros and Burley.

I’m a piker, with only about 40 briars and TWO (count ‘em TWO) cobs. I guess I need to order a few more. The cheapo stems are a negative, but a small one. I do like they way they smoke. I think Ron, the Bezos of pipery should be more sharing. Don’t you?

Not because I make Briars but from my own experience. They seem to sour quickly with my choices of tobacco blends and they get nasty as all get out to clean, not to mention the bowls are just too small, a tease at best for me. I prefer a briar with at least a 7/8" chamber 2 inches deep so I can enjoy a smoke for more then a minute or two. That being said, I usually smoke a pipe off an on in the process of the day so I'm always picking it up and relighting and setting it back down to continue work. Sadly me trying to enjoy a pipe while I'm at the lathe, buffer, bench while I'm trying to concentrate on what I'm doing just doesn't work for me.

I have a lot that I don't smoke at all, a few with sentimental attachments, and a few curiosities. And a bunch of cheap but good pipes.

Your post embodied my experience so far Hey, there good for starting out and practicing how to smoke a pipe but, if one smokes as I do there aint nothing that beats a briar. I've been smoking one of mine now for near into a month with only a over night drying (ever so often) and a cleaner run through it after each bowl. No souring, no sogginess, just a good smoke one after another. And again, that aint because I make'em it's just how it is with a good briar. That's my story YMMV.

not to mention the bowls are just too small, a tease at best for me. I’m also a pick it up and put it down all day kind of smoker and I have lots of pipes of all sizes to choose from but I really only smoke my Group 6 size and larger pieces. I rarely if ever smoke my MM Cobs. They just don’t have enough capacity.
