I think the thing with PAD is that it's a byproduct of finding the right pipe honestly I still don't think I've quite found it/them yet don't get me wrong - we all have great pipes - and some love their cobs which are easy to obtain but there's so much variation - other than commissioning a pipe -I find it hard to find a solid rotation that works the way you want it - hence we stock up on a lot of maximalism

Lot of right pipes...I found, finally, the right pipe that ticks off all the variables for me...a Ron of Rd Pipes. Perfect in every way. Then I found another "right" pipe...Cramps of Cramptholomew pipes. He makes another "right" pipe. So...there you have it. Check out their websites. You'll find your right pipe.

My collection is modest at best. However, I intend to expand it over time. I view pipes just as any other tool. Some are more comfortable than others, some do the job better, some look nicer. I dont have just one screwdriver or one hammer. I dont have just one pipe either, or one set of rotations of pipes, preferring variety and change.
I have several hammers, none of them is the right hammer, but depending on the job a specific hammer may be whats needed to accomplish the task, I feel pipes are no different.
Just my perspective.

I tend to see it through the lens of "the only constant in life is change". Today, my tastes said Devil Anse, Sea Dog, and coffee. Tomorrow they might say something totally different. In this sense, a single piece of constant perfection is impossible, but, having a good selection can make "perfect for how I'm feeling right now" possible.

I have a lot of pipes. None are what I could consider expensive as meager income often reaps meager rewards in the form of products. But the pipes I do have smoke well. They all have their faults as none are the "right" pipe. Not sure what that is nor have I taken the time to smoke all of them in concession to pick the best traits. Ill get around to it eventually. My most used, which is listed in my bio as my favorite pipe, is a bent billiard. But that is so vague. It does tick a majority of the boxes though. I had a thought and it's crazy I'm sure but has anyone ever wondered how many pipes have ever been made in the whole world? Perhaps in the billions or even trillions.

If your fairly new to smoking a pipe it really takes awhile to find the right one or type and that's mainly because your taste buds are just starting to develop according to the tobacco your smoking. After awhile your taste will change to what type of blend you prefer. I'd say maybe a year or two before your palate has developed to the point you'll really be able to tell the difference in a GOOD pipe and a poor one just because your taste buds don't know what one is really yet. Bargain priced and estate pipes can be a real hit and miss and that's not suggesting you run out buy a hand made pipe. I think if you stick to well known mid grade pipes you'll have a better chance at finding one. Savinelli seems to be a real popular brand of pipe but, I for one don't like them but, I'm a bit different then most. I would certainly stay away from System pipes (Peterson, etc.) and the like till later if you really think you want one. It can be a long journey but, if your wise it can be affordable. Aint nothing like purchasing several pipes at a good cost to your pocket book only to find NONE of'em smoke worth a dang for you.
