hello all. not sure if this is the best place to put this scree; but i am looking for my right pipe. and that more or less seems to be looking like small bowled, 'lightweight' 9mm pipes. any suggestions? i only own two pipes as yet. one is a morgan pipes straight rhodesian with what i think is a fairly large bowl. my first was a cheap grabow riviera which is pretty small. now i may be about to offend someone but after literally 2 hours of owning the grabow i just found myself wanting a quicker smoke that i didnt have to relight constantly(im a cigarette smoker) so i took out a japanese style pull saw and i cut it down. so now it has a bowl of about an inch deep and 3/4 or so wide. and as it's become broken in, i really like it. it sits in my truck and i get cool, satisfying puffs a few times a day at work. the rhodesian on the other hand, while being very aesthetically pleasing is just way too much bowl and im having a hard time breaking it in because i never want to fill it. i did actually manage a whole bowl last night at a bbq but i literally smoked that same bowl almost all night. the only drawback of the grabow is the filters, i really think i should try to stick with 9mm pipes. im not quitting cigs because theyre good for me.. another thing ive noticed is that i may actually want to get bent, i do seem to like to clench and would like to keep using my hands during the day. am i doomed to grabow land eternally if i dont want to spend hundreds? i tend to modify everything i touch so that may just be the right way to go anyway. but i want that 9mm...also i think i'd like an author or a bent rhodie. anyway, thanks in advance and have a great saturday.

There are a lot of good, inexpensive pipes. Price doesn't determine how well a pipe will smoke. You might consider some estate pipes.

A Missouri Meerschaum (cob) Pony Express might be right up your alley. It isn't filtered though, but as a 25+ year cigarette smoker, I find the bowl size to be close to perfect. I'll also echo the above, Moonshine makes some great pipes with smaller bowls. I have one of their Devil Dog models, also unfiltered, but the bowl size on it is great for a 20 minute smoke.
For a quick, filtered, smoke you might look at the Rattray's Outlaw line. They have one that is the iconic Devil Anse shape, with a fairly small bowl, that has the 9mm filter.
One more option might be the Savinelli Lolita line. They are small pipes, meant for a short smoke, and they run the 6mm balsa wood filters.

Ropp pipes are small, some tiny. And cheap.

There's also the Huck Finn, Tom Sawyer and Mizzou

I have a vest pipe like the Savinelli but made by S.M. Frank, no it doesn’t smoke like my Maestro De Paja, but it offers a good smoke when loaded with a light aro or Virginia blend when I know that a long smoke is not possible and I don’t have to carry a pipe cleaner.
But then again, Ron likes Captain Black Grape, so you should factor that into the advice he offers.

Lousy draw and too short a smoke to make it worthwhile. And there are lots of CBG fans.

If yours is a one hitter, the bowl is certainly much smaller than mine...I would trash it also.

I thought the Grabow Riviera's were small to begin with. Anyway, I am a former cig smoker. I don't smoke my pipe more than a couple times a week, but I actually love my Grabow's. I have quite a few of the older one, but mostly I smoke a Grabow Starfire. Canadian shape I think. Filters are ok for moisture if that is a problem for you, other than that, toss em. I believe the Grabow Lark is their smallest. I normally smoke after my work on my Friday, sit in a lounge, have a beer, relax, and spend 1 to 2 hours smoking.

I like small bowled pipes. The Riviera line tends to be small, as do the Lark and Cardinal, as well as the MM Pony Express/Eaton &c and others mentioned above. I think the solution here is to find one that smokes well and only load as much as you think you'll smoke. There are no rules and if you load half a bowl, no one is there to stop you. Drying your tobacco will minimize relights. A small bowl of most tobaccos won't overwhelm most cigarette smokers. Maybe there is one rule: enjoy what you smoke and smoke what you enjoy.

wow, thanks to everyone! i found a lot to look into here and decided to stop fretting about the exact bowl size and i ordered a missouri meerschaum legend and a grabow duke. i tend to get a little crazy with the resolution dial on my new hobbies, if you know what i mean. someone above mentioned that i shouldnt maybe worry so much about filling the pipe every time. i have of course been doing that but i have been assuming it was a bad habit. perhaps scorching the bowl? especially since all my pipes are brandy new. on another note i did the honey thing on my cut down grabow and like it but was lucky enough to randomly read that you shouldnt do that to a cob before i did it to a cheap missouri devil anse that i picked up at the shop the other day. which i am currently enjoying. thanks again to all for the help and i will definitely be getting a rattray 140 in a couple paychecks. looks awesome.

It shouldn’t be a problem as long as you stay away from torch lighters (that should never be used on a pipe anyway). The match is the coolest flame that you can put into the bowl.

thanks, yeah i went ahead and ordered a pipe lighter and have been using a bic in the interim so i assume once i have the correct flame much of these issues will dry up. im just looking to make the whole pipe thing as enjoyable as possible, (no tongue bite if possible, etc) so that i won't be tempted to smoke cigarettes. im sure that i am in plenty of good company, using pipes to quit cigs but i am equally sure that many people will find this struggle silly and wonder why you'd even try to smoke if it wasn't a pure pleasure. thanks again.

One other point, as I think more about this, but something I have found along the way. Pipe smoking will never serve as a substitute for cigarettes, for me anyway. They are just different, where cigarette smoking is easy to sneak in quickly when you need to, and makes for a good excuse to take a desperate five minute break at work, pipe smoking requires you to slow down, often doing prep work and then maintaining an appropriate cadence while smoking. It's like comparing a heroin needle with a meditation retreat, for lack of a better analogy, and for me the key has been learning to slow my life down and de-stress. The pipe just naturally fits into that process.

very good point. while discussing smoking with friends i have often made the analogy that rolling your own cigarettes is better in the sense that it is contemplative and you have to take the minute. which always leads to thought. whereas smoking say, marlboros, prefabs, squares, etc is a lot more like pill popping. easy answers to complicated questions almost always lack the depth to truly satisfy the problem. also, in the few weeks since i have taken up the pipe i have already once been inadvertently a couple mins late back from my 10 o'clock coffee break. viva la revolution.
