I have the pleasure of smoking the oft revered Esoterica Margate. This treat was gifted to me by a wonder, kind forum member when I told how much I wanted to try it. He sent me almost a whole tin in a jar, and I was dumbfounded by the amount. And, believe it or not, another member is sending me MORE Margate. It pays to be honest and sincere on these sites. BS and the like will get you nowhere in this world! The Margate was one of the most complex blends I've ever tried. A fine English blend true and true. The flavors were sophisticated, mild to med. in strength, and mellow. If it wasn't so hard to get it could pass-off as an everyday smoke. Similar to the G.L. Pease Westminister I smoke now. It has been aging since 2019, and though I cannot compare it to a freshly opened tin, I believe it has aged to a good smoking point. The leaves just had that look of nicely-meshed tobacco. They appeared to have "married" well. The ribbon cut glistened with prevalent oils as well. What a beautiful site to see. No tongue bite or hot burning either. This tobacco gave-off just the right attitude. I'll close now about my experience with Esoterica's Margate, and hopefully you will get as lucky as me. Again, The Westminister is as close as I've come in flavor Best to all, LeRoy

I don't get the Esoterica madness. I'm sure that they make decent tobacco, But the 2 that I've tried have left me very unimpressed. Wilke tobacco has more higher rated blends and it is more readily available.

I've not had the Margate, but I went through a small tin of Westminister like Grant went through Richmond one time. I remember it fondly, and if I ever get close to finishing some of the open tobacco I have on hand, I'll order a larger tin.

I've had Margate (may still have some in a jar) but I find there are much better English blends out there, at least to my taste buds. An occasional taste of Penzance is fun, especially since it is so rare and an unusual English. There are many fine English blends, from SPC, MacBaren, KBV and so on.

I am an unashamed Esoterica / Germain & Sons Fan! Don't see too much of hit here, but on other sites I've seen plenty of "Sour Grapes" towards these blends. Are they impossible to come by? NO ! Can you log onto any pipe baccy site and find em? No! With a little bit of effort and strategery (see what I did there?) you can find any and all of the blends out there. Over the last few years I've found a couple of "Honey Holes" that have it in stock frequently and don't charge ebay prices. Cheers (by the by..... Smoking some 2011 Margate in this little beauty right now....)

What are your personal takes, and opinions on this tobacco? Thanks, LeRoy

It's been a good while ,Leeroy, but I remember a clean ,well balanced smoke ,with a smooth finish that ,more often than not, left me wanting another bowl. Crisp is a term I use, when what I guess I should say is bright, and that applies here. If I was looking for an all day, everyday English , Westminister would be high on my list. Herb.

Just call Brick & Mortar stores with no web presence. Easy peasy.

I have tried every Esoterica blend except for Stonehaven, and I can say unequivocally that Margate is by far the best blend they have and is one of, if not my favorite, English blends. I have about 3 pounds of it stored up that I grab whenever I can (at normal retail prices not gouging internet prices).

Funny thing is, I saw an interview with the long time manager of Perretti's (name forgotten) and he said before the internet he had a closet full of Esoterica and couldn't give it away. With the internet the whole thing flip flopped and now represent unicorn blends. Go figure.

And there is the herd mentality from the forums and social media.

Found some once, quickly found it better than Gawith. Sadly never expect to find any again in my price range.

Found some once, quickly found it better than Gawith. Sadly never expect to find any again in my price range. Apparently, if you're willing to spend some time on the phone, Esoterica blends can still be found at pretty normal prices. Shops just don't list it online. I've never done it, personally, because I hate the phone, but that's what I've been told.

The only two esoterica blends I enjoy are Margate and Stonehaven and I have a deep cellar of both and go through it sparingly. Other than those, I can take or leave the rest.

I've never tried Margate. I have tried Stonehaven and Penzance, though I wasn't really taken by either. The mystique surrounding tin or bag acquisition was quite captivating, to be sure.
