Found this recently and thought I would share. From an advertisement in a small monthly publication "Pipe Smoker" dated 1986. Here's some McClelland...

The Pipe Smoker was a great publication! 1986 was when I was really getting involved in the hobby and I remember paying those prices. I was buying 5 pack stacks of EMP and 965 for about $14.00. I sold mine out to early at only $50.00 a tin.

Was "Old Goudrie" an older name for Old Gowrie, or a completely different blend?

William, if you have any of them tins from 1986, in an act of generosity, I can help you double your investment.
Looking out for you, bro.

That's true inflation plus a bit of taxes. Anything that can't be made in China will show you what the real inflation is. I mean, you can't buy a roll of toilet paper for a dollar.

I wish we had those prices here today. I was a little too late to the party.

1986's $16.30 is 2021's $39.21 I get $40.91, but close enough. The real inflation is from the 70s. My $3600 pickup would be $36000 now. And actually, if I had kept it, it would be worth almost that much today.

It used to buy a round trip from Houston to Galveston on the trolley my Mom told me. When I was a kid you could buy a 5 pack of Nik-L-Nips. I saw a bag of 2 dozen in the Cracker Barrel for $6. Too early to do the math. We've been paying $4.39 for a loaf of bread.

BOY! what I wouldn't give for a time machine...but if I went back, I'd be too busy correcting all my stupid mistakes to do any shopping.

I’d be sitting on a couple of dozen of the 8oz gold top tins of 759 instead of 10lbs plus of bulk Dunhill A21,000 aka 1Q. Oh well if I was down to just that I could probably like it enough to smoke if I had to.

If I had only gobbled up domain names and squatted on them...coca-cola.com, johnson and johnson, etc....

Don't be fooled. Those inflation CPI calculators put out by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) aren't worth horse pucky. The CPI has for years been corrupted and that useless system is beyond broken . . . at least until someone with integrity fixes it. Pull it up and check what a dollar one year ago August/2020 is now (August/2021) equal to in buying power - it will tell you $1.05. It doesn't take rocket science to realize housing, gas, food, etc. are all way beyond those published #s.
