It’s a quiet night in SW Florida. I’m sitting on the lanai with a coffee and an excellent bowl of tobacco. And a thought crossed my mind. Do you you realize that in 40 or so years from now, if there are still pipe smokers, C&D, G L Pease and 4noggins will be considered Codger Blends?

If I live for 40 more years, I will be ancient.

The old standby rough and crumble cut burleys fit the bill. Mac Baren's Plum Cake has been around since the late 1950s and no one calls it codger.

I think that codger blends are defined by being available in drugstores, gas stations, Walmart’s, etc…
C&D and Pease haven’t made that jump.

To me, codger blends are the tobaccos you used to find in drugstores. Blends like Prince Albert, Carter Hall. Sir Walter Raleigh, Granger...I've gone back and tried most of them. I don't hate them, but they don't satisfy, either. And they put so much PG in them, that they never dry out.

Oh, and they're not a bargain. We can get better bulk tobacco from C&D for a much better price.

Except for my dad most of my family has lived into their 80's and a few into their 90s. I will be surprised if I make 80 though. Of course I'm surprised every morning when I wake up.

I still smoke an occasional codger blend. Half and Half, Prince Albert or Edgeworth Ready Rubbed match.

I'll chime in here in agreement that my understanding of Codger Blends were more along the lines of the ubiquitous blends available at drugstores.
Speakin of which I'm smokin another "breakin bowl" of CH in my Smokers Haven Horn / Oliphant. Sippin some Buffalo Trace

Over in the NI, a codger blend would be st Bruno or Condor. I've not met an older pipe smoker who smokes anything other than that (and it's heavily weighted on the Condor side). I think that's all that was really on offer at the newsagent.

As one of the younger members on the site, I'll get back to ya'll in 40 years with regards to this. Although Ol' Ed might just outlive us all.

How come there's no old biddy blends? I mean, it's pretty much just you and that Granny lady from The Outlaw Josey Wales. Not sure 2 is enough to get your own category of blends.

I think Jethro and Ellie Mae's grandmother liked a cob with her rheumatiz medicine once a in a while, too.
