We never really defined the purpose of a truck gun. Could be several of course. Out here the most often use is coyotes or porcupines. The 250/3000 used to be the gun of choice. Now it's getting to be the 6.5 Creedmor. If I were driving into an area dangerous enough to need a truck gun for self defense I just wouldn't go there.

I thought the problem had been defined but I see that post did not make it onto the forum, LOL!
I was thinking less about personal self defense than dogs attacking livestock, Gators attacking dogs. Putting down animals on the highway struck by other vehicles. Signaling the pursuing Posse I am ready to surrender... or not.

I prospect for minerals, gems, turquoise etc in areas that are either on the southern border or very close to it. If I am off pavement in the desert, there is a rifle in the truck, a pistol on my hip and plenty of ammo for both. The rifle is close at hand if I am digging. I have a pack nearby that I can get by with for a week if I have to. Water would be the big problem if I was left afoot, but I could improvise and maybe get past that problem too, depending on the terrain, flora and fauna.

Dead on. 7mm projectiles have a ballistic magic about them. I love the .308, but the 7mm's do not take a back seat to it. The 7-08 would be my first choice for a kid's first deer rifle. Some go to the .243 and I think that's a mistake, as the .243 is an expert's rifle IMO. Sorry... bit of drift here... I think that's its problem. It tends to get ghettoized as a cartridge for kids and wives, not suitable for men. Men shoot .30's and magnums. Whether they need them or not. My friends dad was 7'2" tall and weighed 450+. He hunted with a Remington 700 243 and always got his deer with one shot.

I only keep the 9mm in the truck in case I make a big mistake or just get lost. But mostly because we've hit 3 deer this year, although they all disappeared into the woods seemingly uninjured.

I never saw him throw one. I think he was more of a hug you to death kind of guy. He was very recoil sensitive. He shot a 44 magnum model 29 once and it hit him in the head. Blood all over.

I don't count my sidearm as it's always with me. I don't inventory my pants and I don't inventory my Sig.

I don't count my sidearm as it's always with me. I don't inventory my pants and I don't inventory my Sig. Same here. I forgot I had a sidearm in my waistband while shooting at Rio Salado gun range. During a ceasefire at the range, one of the range nazis saw my gun and freaked out screaming at me that on a cold rangeI was not permitted to have a hot one on me. Even though he knew me as a regular, his screaming like a raped ape caused me to hand him my membership badge as I walked away from the facility never to return. A simple sideline conference with me would have sufficed, but going all out Michael Bloomberg pissed me off.

Too bad. Some "range officers" have pressure-on-the-brain from their High Status.

If I were to put a gun that I already own in my truck it would be an AR15. If I bought one for that purpose, I'd have to research it. See what was available. Maybe a Ruger Mini 14 - smaller, lighter than an AR. Already have loads of ammo for it.

I always liked the idea of A sks as it was at the time cheap. The ammo was readably available and dirt cheap so I could practice shooting it a lot. What happened their used to a glut of decent mail surp rifles coming in about 10 years ago or so. I picked up a Yugoslavian sks for under 200 bucks with my c&r ffl back then. Sadly to do life circumstances I’ve since sold off my meager collection. But it was a fun hobby whilst it lasted.

State department just banned the importation of all Russian ammo beginning September 7, so no more cheap 7.62; supply problems will be even worse than they are now.

Mine is a Ruger American Ranch in 7.62x39. Bolt action that takes Mini 30 mags. I have seen those and would be interested in one. A handy little bolt gun. Pretty accurate too.

If it was holstered I don't get his damage. The range I used in Los Angeles insisted that guns be stacked i the rack provided. Shooters step back and keep back until the call to return to the line.

If it was holstered I don't get his damage. Exactly. At my gun range, people are encouraged to carry on the premises - but "the gun must remain concealed - unless needed for defense of yourself or others, in which case judicious aim is requested. Any ammo expended in such a case will be gladly replaced by the owner."

I bought a lot 7.62 x 39 many years back when you could get 20 rounds for $3 or $4. Stuff from China, Russia, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, ..... Unfortunately I'm sure it all has corrosive primers. And the "brass" of the Chinese stuff is garbage - seems to be very thin - 3 or 4 in 10 rounds split the neck. The Russian stuff looks good and it's covered with a "varnish" of some sort, which I assume seals it up and prevents corrosion. But I should shoot it all up and replace with good stuff.

Let me know if you need any USGI bore cleaner from WWII made specifically for corrosive primers. I have a case of sealed cans, no charge for however many cans you might want. When I was on the range, my gun was holstered and concealed under a cover garment, it only showed when I bent over to pick up a fresh target during ceasefire. That was against the rules, and I wouldn’t have minded a gentle reprimand, but life is too short to support assholes.

I have a bunch of Wolf and some Phillipines ammo but I don't think any of it is corrosive. I don't even know how much I have. My friend bought one of those Russian surplus tins that he hasn't opened that probably is corrosive though.
