First step is admitting you have a problem? I have a problem
I have 2 pipes on the way from Goldbrick (pleasure doing business with you Herb!), and was just browsing SP & others trying to decide if I was going to order another.
I managed to stop my self. After all, I have TAD as well....

So, what's the problem? If you have a pipe, you need tobacco. If you have tobacco, another pipe would help to smoke it. Rinse, repeat. Isn't that how it's supposed to work?

It sucks being a budget collector. Knowing what not to buy is very important! I keep PAD in check by always thinking, will I kick myself if I spend the money this pipe and a Must Have piece comes available tomorrow or there's always the sure fire cure if your wife finds out what you've spent on pipes, tobacco or in my case pipe lighters. Ouch!
I passed on a really nice piece this week on eBay that was so close to a must and it stung a little until I got an email from a buddy who might have a couple of pieces for me at the pipe show in Texas next week. I guess will see

I guess will see it doesn't suck for me, collecting on a budget - I'm just playing a different game than some folks and I'm ok with that. Also, I don't really think of myself as a collector as much as just trying to build a decent set of smoking pipes. Also, being pretty new (this time around), I still need to build a cellar.
I do know what you are talking about, I don't get too upset if I am not able to get a particular pipe. There a lot of pipes out there that I like, another will come along.
Really I just loved trailboss's made up word and wanted to use it again

I guess will see I got no wife to keep me in check. What I have in lieue of a family is some disposable income that otherwise would be spent on the kids and grandkids I don't have. So I have some nice pipes. A nice stereo. Some other nice things. But I'll get old alone. That's just how life turned out for me. It happens. I'm not trying to be maudlin. I'm just saying, hey, when some of you guys feel the budget pinching you, remember why and smile.

It is always good to set yourself a budget, and lay off the scotch on late night window shopping on the interwebs. Ask me how I know. It could be worse though...a buddy of mine went to an auction in the nineties and after a few drinks and bids was the owner of a BMW motorcycle that was unobtainium at the time after a James Bond movie was released. The next morning he woke up and reality settled in. It happened on a week where sis in law, mom in law was hanging at his crib....along with the wife.

Yep there was a time when the wife supported my PAD & TAD. To be clear TAD has subsets, namely PTAD (Pipe Tobacco ) & CAD (Cigar) or to be consistent CTAD. A few cigar coolidors later, boxes of pipe tobacco and a decent pipe collection ruined it. I have no shame.....😁

At least he had the BMW so he could just ride away. No better therapy.

Thanks! Nothing high-end, but some of the things I've been interested in. Great place for old-school/American heritage/drugstore stuff. All NOS. And their own work they do in the basement workshop. Like stepping back in time. You're even greeted with the aroma of burning pipe tobacco when you open the door.

Hah! They have three chairs in the tobacco corner where all sort of characters hang out. No Playboys sighted, but they might be tucked under boxes of tobacco tins. They have so much stuff there, it a bit overwhelming. On our way out we went into a small room with more pipes. If I'd seen them earlier, my purchase strategy may have been modified. Didn't matter. Spent everything I budgeted for the trip. By the way, the two pipes on the right (a Grabow CDL and Grabow Viking) are gifts for my son. One of these days, I'll get him up there on his day off.

The local shop I used to call mine always had the same 2 old codgers in it doing exactly that.
Sounds like quite a store.

No matter how much time I spend at Paul's Pipe Shop, I still come across things that I’ve never noticed before. I bet you were happy to find out that you were shopping there during the year end holiday sale. By "small room with more pipes", do you mean the one at the back of the shop that leads into the upstairs workshop or the pipe store room in the basement? I suspect you are referring to the room on the main floor at the back. That’s technically the Club Room which is a private smoking area for Arrowhead Pipe Club Members, but as you’ve seen it’s a catch all room with some chair squeezed in. in addition to the Aroowhead Mixture that you got, I highly recommend Darwin Asa (American-English)and Morning Smoke (Va and some Lat). Also, Late Night Smoke but only if you like a blend heavy-ish on Lat and Perique. Hopefully, we'll run into each other there some day. BTW- If you do Facebook, there is a group called Pipe Smokers of Michigan which is restricted to Michigan residents.
