Let me say, right up front that I don't have a single photo with this post. My phone is an oldtimey flip phone, and photos are so poor it's not worth the time. Anyway, lately, my old Kristi freehand has been looking like a stepchild; oils and tars had collected on the rim and there was a general haze over the whole stummel from years of smoking...also it was just starting to taste A bit off, so yesterday I took it to the garage for some upkeep. After removing the stem, I wiped the tobacco chamber out with a paper towel, then stuffed some of the towel in the bowl. then I gave the rim a good scrub with a soft toothbrush and white vinegar, then I worked the tooth over the entire bowl. It's unreal how well the vinegar washes away the crud with no harm to the finish. Next I took a tapered cleaner and 190 proof Everclear to the shank ,and followed with more cleaners until one came out white. I moved on to the stem with the Everclear in the same fashion , then I took a soft cloth and red rouge polishing compound to it until a had a pleasing black gloss. Last I put the old boy back together and gave it a light coat of Jamestown Fine Furniture polish...this is a heavy liquid mix of lemon oil and carnauba wax, that adds a lasting shine to bowl and stem alike, and so far, for the last 5 to 7 years ,I've seen no ill effect from it . The whole job took less that twenty minuets, and my reward was a pipe that looked better than it did when I unboxed it ,years ago, and tonight I hope to be rewarded with a cleaner, sweeter smoke!

Gotta love giving old pipes new life. I found a bunch of them yesterday and they're on the bench for a cleaning and buffing

Bringing old pops back to life can be hard work... Wakes up cranky , moves a bit slower and insists on oatmeal every morning.....

You might be right, and you could have call me tightwad too, and not been too far from correct...the season for giving, however, is upon us, and i might have to give myself a new phone.
