It looks like it was a banner weekend for spammers. We had a flood of attempted memberships from a variety of toxic IP addresses all over the world. Luckily our filters work very very well (knock on wood).
To any of our new members that had a bit of a delay in getting approved, my apologies. I had to weed through all the requests and verify before I was letting anyone in the front door.
Welcome though. Very glad to have you as a part of the community!

Funny, I noticed that the other day. There was a real surge this weekend.

We ran a geographic filter when I worked for the payroll company. Which was great until one of our clients decided to take an extended vacation in China or Russia. Constant vigilance is necessary.

I make $4000 per month from home, 5 hours per week. Ask me how! Also, Dr Goodbody's Herbal Woo Elixir is now available. Cures fatigue, syphilis, piles, headaches, hypochondria, consumption, and tremors. I've tried it and it works when most doctors were stumped! Conact: msrealperson at toteslegit dot scam.
Thanks for keeping out the riffraff, guys.

It happened again last night. That said, terrapinflyer, tell me more about this elixir.... You reminded me of the famous Cigarbid intro by qmechanics... I just reread the thread - great entertainment, and to his credit, Q handled it well.

I hate to sound conspiratorial, but we have several new people join over the last day or so...as far as I know, none have responded after the initial post.
Could it be that spammers are getting craftier?

The last five "Hey I am the new guy" have never responded, the sixth hasn't checked in since the 5th.

Maybe, if it's a new thing, and not like Facebook where everything is thrown in your face...and add to that, the fact that you have to actually GO LOOKING for the forum, people sign up and aren't in the habit of checking. They go about their business forgetting that they even posted, only to come back a week or two later to see that there are replies to their posts. Maybe not.

at least at the chat, there are one or two (think same person) been checking in at all hours of day/nite. Recommended that nobody "engage" with them...they never have anything to say so why bother. All chat regulars know who they are. Again at the chat, now/then some bimbo- robot female shows hi-lited link to nude pics etc. My anti-virus shows a buncha techno gibberish & can't access. Do agree at the forum, over the yrs I been there, have been "one & done", IMO just minor nuisance. Thx again to all the mods who keep things under control
Ed Duncan yup, creaky old & "techy-talk" for most part, said gibberish

Time to upgrade spam and hacking in the criminal code. Making it capital for hackers and life for spammers is OK by me.

Most of these guys think they are crafty, but they aren't focusing on any one site. They are blasting out registrations to various sites with bots. Luckily, those IP addresses and email addresses get added to the Forum Spam database pretty quickly. We are generally pretty low on the list of sites to go after.
I do a bit of research before actually approving anyone, and most have actually included a personal note with their registration, which a spam bot generally is incapable of doing.
There continues to be a pretty high volume of attempts lately though. Must be that time of year, or we came back up on the spammers list as they got down the alphabet.

My wife thinks that there should be a mandatory death penalty for any computer crime, as the perps are smart enough to know that it's wrong. After 30 years in IT, I believe that it should be life at hard labor. Our small company was spending 4 million dollars a year in security. Multiply that by all the exposed companies and it's a huge drain on the economy.

And extradition should be mandatory or we sanction the hell out of them or simply go to war.
