Hi,
I’m Phil, 55 years old, from Manchester in the UK, and I fancy trying smoking a pipe.
I don’t know where it came from, but a few weeks ago I started reading about pipe restoration (I dabble in many, many hobbies), and I’ve now purchased a couple of cheap estate pipes from eBay to give it a go.
I’m also thinking, as I said, out of the blue, that I quite fancy trying the odd pipe.
Last time I smoked anything was well over 30 years ago. I have no experience with pipes, and only limited experience with a few cheap cigars.
I’m planning to clean these estate pipes with a reamer and hot alcohol retort, as well as restoring the stems, but I wonder if it might be prudent to buy a new pipe for my first ventures?
I’m also wondering if anyone can suggest a good tobacco for a first-timer? Something with good flavour, but a cool smoke with limited nicotine, maybe?
Whilst I can’t give an idea of what tobacco I like, can say that I take my coffee as espresso, my curry as vindaloo and my steak blue, so I’m not afraid of big flavour 🙂
cheers.

Another welcome from Northern California, Phil. Most folks start with aromatics. There in England, Sam Gawith, Gawith Hogarth and Germain's offer high quality tobaccos.

adding welcome/greets from 50miles East of Buffalo, NY. Long timer with cigars & pipe, '62 to be exact. Not at all friendly with hand tools, they hate me, wish you good luck in restorations. Long time "lata-holic", all my blends heavy on same. Sure others can be more helpful with your request than am I

Welcome. You may want to call GQ Tobaccos and speak to them about possible blends to try. Good folks and I'm sure they will set you right. www.gqtobaccos.com/

Welcome from Northern Ireland. www.mysmokingshop.co.uk has a great selection of tobacco and corn cob pipes. I'd grab one of those for starting out. We're here to help.

I second what Papipeguy and Legendlover suggested as sources to buy tobaccos. But...there is no better way than having hands on advice, in person with people that really know their stuff, offer great counsel and direction. I am a member of The pipe club Of London, and I heartily recommend that you contact them about the next meeting. pipecluboflondon.com/

Another Welcome to the Patch Phil.
I too started out refurbing pipes, a lot of fun and have been able to breathe life back into some real beauties.
As far as tobacco recommendations...
I started out by purchasing samples of many of the "Match Blends" (copies of popular blends)
Found out I love English blends. Didn't like the Bright Virginias or the Cherry Aro's. They all burned my tongue terribly.
Feel free to post questions here on the patch or PM any of us.
Take care
Dino

A pipe tobacco that I thought would make a decent introduction, cost, bite and taste considered, is John Bull Royal English. It should not bite , has an interesting Latakia and Burley intermix (that gives one a decent example of both flavors) and is relatively inexpensive. There are other blends we can discuss as well (whether or not John Bull Royal English is available to you. ). www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/5593/scandinavian-tobacco-group-stg-john-bull-royal-englishWelcome to the Patch!!!

Welcome from New Hampshire.
Others have made some good suggestions. Hopefully someone can direct you to a local tobacconist. My recommendation would be to try some samples of various styles such as English, Virginia, Aromatic, Burly and see what catches your fancy. I started with aros, then discovered english/balklan blends, and am currently exploring various burlys (Va/bur's becoming a favorite).
Discovering your preference for packing a pipe, tobacco cut, and moisture levels takes a little time. There are some good primers out there.

Well, he was here for a second or two. Weird how people will take the time to register, make an introductory announcement and we never hear from them agai.
