The MacArthur 5 star second I received from Missouri Meerschaum came with a split shank. It looks like the diameter of the shank was too small for the bit. My other pipes with the same bit measure 13.6mm OD, while the 5 star is 11.1mm. I think that when the bit was inserted, there just wasn't enough material there to hold it.
I decided to have some fun with i,t and ordered a long nickel band and a churchwarden stem from Vermont Freehand ($6.75 total). The band made for an easy glue up and reinforcement of the shank. I only have some basic flat files and sandpaper, but was able to shape and fit the stem onto the shank without too much effort.
The repair is far from perfect, but I am pretty happy with the results. I think I'll try out the WCC Thanksgiving blend in it tomorrow:

A 38 or 44 shell would reinforce that nicely, but I like the job you did better.

Thank you guys. I did test fit a .45 ACP case, but decided on adding the band and stem to the VF order.
