I received a letter from an attorney who worked for my family and for me since the mid 1970s. It seems he is retiring. When I first met this counselor around 1974, he was a fresh Associate attorney out of law school working for an important local law firm. We were about the same age and probably still are. He has finally decided to hang his wig and gown on the rack and pick up the fly rod and wicker basket. Bless his heart. I think of all the people he has helped with so many problems and needs. He was and still is a good one. We joke about "scum sucking bottom feeders" but when help is needed, Bob T. was there. Always with a smile and a "can-do".

People complain about lawyers, but a good one is sure handy when you need one. And yes, you probably still are about the same age.

I had a great friend that was a lawyer, and a professor at the Southwest College of Law in Houston, part of UH now. He died a few years ago. He took cases for people who he knew would probably never be able to pay him. Jim Dyer was a Saint. I've known several others who aren't worth talking about.

Sadly, most of us have known those who exploit their profession for their own gain. My old Lawyer was a good man who really helped people.

Good for you, John. They're more rare than an honest mechanic.

I believe I have a good one for my most "recent" issue. At first I got discouraged because of lack of communication. But, when I met with him again before court, he brought in another lawyer from his firm and the whole "team" was more prepared than I was. This is an older gentleman that I've known, and worked for, for the last ~20 years. He's been practicing law since the dinosaurs roamed the earth. Also, being in a "small" town, he knows the ins and outs of every other lawyer and judge. He's a good, honest man, that values his family before anything else, and that's why I hired him. According to the way the court went, and the presentation of my desk of "evidence" compared to what her lawyer dug up, I know, without any doubt in my mind, that I made the right choice. And the outcome of that day was worth every penny. There's still a lot more to go.
I'm yet to receive a bill. That doesn't mean I'm not waiting for it.
Being in small town Georgia we have some odd lawyers. Back when I was stupid and made mistakes on a regular basis I was looking for a lawyer for a DUI (I wish I could go back in time and kick my own arse). I walked in 1 lawyers office and the first thing he told me was I needed to go to church asap and ask for forgiveness. That meeting ended after 1 sentence. I've met with many throughout the years and I've narrowed my list of who I would use or recommend down to 2.

It's good to know there are still some decent people out there.

My Lawyer Saint is Joe Phiefer, won our case against Ameriprise, 32 Exxon employees got hosed, took 3 years, ran a hotshot truck till I gave out. Stents saved me, we win 22 million plus 6 million punitive damages, wasn’t made while but 3/4 of my initial investment. Now I live on Social Security don’t need much everything is paid for. And the reason is my 2 lawyers fought a swarm of Sharks in a suit . There are good and bad ones like in every phase of life, I had good ones!

We joke about 'em, but you need a good attorney and a good tax accountant in your stable. Save you more money than they cost.
