Due to some problems they've been having recently, I'm thinking of getting some home security devices for the folks. Something along the lines of Ring or Blink or one of those kinds of systems. Nothing super fancy.
I assume some of you guys have these kinds of systems. Any suggestions or advice?

We have a Ring doorbell and camera. Work just fine. Adjust them so you're not picking up cars that happen to drive down the street or people walking by on the sidewalk.

We also have Ring doorbell, Son gave it to me one Christmas stayed in the box for a year, visiting son from Houston finally installed it, hookup was easy. We both love it wife and I , I can check on Buddy from my recliner, view whether wind Is blowing watching my Flag. Went to a newer model last year, didn’t cost a lot, better camera. Try Woot.com sometimes they have deals on Ring.

My security system is two GSPs, an AK behind the front door, and a 1911 on the bedside table.

We bought our house with a hard wired system that has motion detectors on the first floor, all the windows and doors chime when opening, and a bell on the side of the house that would raise the dead.
We have never used the alarm, while home or away. We go the Plainsman route when home, when away I get a family member to hang out with Duke.
We have super low crime rates, and an armed retired cop across the street that is home most of the time and is as alert as a watchdog.
Having said that, the current generation wireless alarms sound like the way to go, simplisafe sounds like a great product if it performs as advertised, and a lot less expensive than a conventional alarm company wiring up the house and having you sign a long term costly contract.

We have a SimpliSafe system. It's easy to install, monitering is reasonable and it works. You can add devises to it easily if you find out you need additional protection in parts of the house.

We have an Ooma system. Cheap and it does what we need it to. The house was wired with an ADT system, but they wanted way too much for the service.

I use the Blink system. Bought it on Amazon. Started with 5 motion cameras outside. Added a couple more later, the added 3 more (2 inside). I only use the inside cameras when I leave town. I'm happy with it. I got the setup back when recording to the cloud was free, so I'm "grandfathered", but I think they are charging a small monthly fee now. The cameras are on wifi and battery powered - so no wires to run. They are easy to mount and connect to your home network with no problems.

House is pretty much left unprotected. I seldom even lock the doors when I leave. Most things of value are in a safe.
My workshop and tool shed has an alarm connected to a siren. Loud it is, too.
There is no law response to alarms here. Not even if a burglary has actually occurred. Just drive into town and file a report.
If I were to "render harmless permanently" some crime perp, they may come out to see but probably would prefer if I disposed of the evidence in the usual way. Prairie. Since the perps are likely to be drug addled young people who live here, I would not want that on my hands.

The folks don't need any indoor cameras. They just need to know who's at the door or skulking around their cars. This is more about personal safety than theft prevention.
I like the installation convenience of batteries, Monty, but I don't want dad going up and down ladders to replace them every month or two.

My Ring 2 you take the cover off, press the battery release and bring it in the house ,plug in the battery with the chargeing cord, light on battery turns green when it’s fully charged, all on ground floor, you go outside and slide the battery in the ring houseing, snap the cover on and you’re good to go usually lasts a couple months

I use three Ring doorbells, and have added motion cameras around the area. Love he easy simple setup, everything runs on re-chargable batteries that last a decent amount of time.

where we live, don't feel the need. Lock side/rear doors at nite, neighbor on North side...wide spread motion detector. In front, only about 20 feet to sidewalk, 'nuter 10ft or so to heavy traffic state hi-way, many street lights that come on at dusk. No decorations on front porch area swiped this year around Halloween. I sleep downstairs, have no weapons handy, here since '87, nothing close to a break-in. Lower property taxes here, in the rich folks part of city, probably different story
Ed Duncan, Batavia, NY considered low income for whatever purposes...paperwork etc

Urb, although I know you're asking about Ring and security cameras I have to echo shotguns, and pistols around the house. I don't support the surveillance state.

Dad has a .22 pistol he's had for decades, but we're talking about different kinds of security. They just need to be able to see who's at the door (or skulking around just outside it) before they open it. I don't support the surveillance state, either, but I do support the surveillance house when my elderly parents live in it and have people making threats against them.
Appreciating all the feedback, guys!

I like the installation convenience of batteries, Monty, but I don't want dad going up and down ladders to replace them every month or two. I have one mounted at my front door at face level. The only problem with that is that some people press on the lens thinking it's a doorbell - which usually shifts the camera on it's mount, so I have to aim it again. Another on the front of the house is on the soffit where it's low enough that I can reach it without a ladder. Many of the others are on the soffit, but too high to reach without a ladder. Batteries last 8 months to a year. Sometimes longer - all though once they lasted only 2 months on 1 camera, but I think it was a bad battery. (You are supposed to use lithium AA's (2).) With these, you can call up a snapshot or live video on demand. And they work kind of like a Ring in that you can press a talk button on your phone and talk to people - but I never use it. And everything comes through your smart phone. No TV or computer hook up.

Many to choose from and there are ~$100 single camera setups that can be viewed from a cellphone app. Not sure you'd want to go full system with multiple cameras for just peeking out the front door and driveway.
