I have Photoshop products on several older devices and decided to download Express onto my new iPad Pro. Good grief! Adobe wants to own you. To use it, even temporarily as a test-app, you must fill out detailed info about yourself, your computer, everything. Their privacy details boil down to “We can do anything we want with your info. We WILL sell it to all kinds of other developers at our discretion.” Usage— “You can only use our apps according to how we say you can use them. You don’t own the app. We do. We can restrict you any way we want.” Yada-yada-yada. On it goes, page after page of their slavery contract. I deleted the app.

I've sold my soul to Adobe in that regard - Lightroom and Photoshop are too good not to.

I've sold my soul to Adobe in that regard - Lightroom and Photoshop are too good not to. I hear you. They ARE good apps. Very good, in fact. But they are also arrogant and insist on moneyfying and objectifying me into infinity. Plus, I’m a curmudgeon.

You'll own nothing, and you'll like it.

I deleted the app. Adobe has always been the worst in the world of fine print and use restrictions. The newer versions of PS won't work unless you are connected to the Internet. Luckily, I have a couple of older versions that run like a normal program.

I'm not a fan of the subscription model, but then again, I couldn't afford Photoshop at the price it used to be for the stand alone programme.

Having to be online to use a program is a dealbreaker of mine. No game or software is that good. Having said that, I've never met anyone who owned a licensed copy of Photoshop before so...

Just about every design and commercial photo studio will own a copy, or two. Anybody else is probably wasting his money.

I don't know anything about Mac. I used GIMP in Windows successfully, totally free of charge or Internet. My portables are Android, so I am no help there. It might be worth looking into GIMP or the like.

I was about to suggest GIMP but terrapin beat me to it. It's just as powerful and confusing as Photoshop, but free, and you own it. The documentation is abysmal, but it's free! Free, free, free! Only took me about two hours to add a Union Jack to the tail of my 172 in Flight Simulator.

I find that Photoshop Elements will do anything I need to do, and believe I bought the last version available on CD. Then again, my need is small. But I keep an old Windows 8.1 machine with all my photo stuff on it just for that reason. Also, I have a Canon PRO-100 printer attached to it via cable. Do not dabble enough with photography anymore to warrant screwing up my setup which works really well.
I hate technology too (sort of).

I haven't used anything like every feature of either one, but I've used both programs quite a bit. GIMP isn't as good as PS. Some of the filters aren't as good. The warp and selection tools aren't as good. It's a bit clunky in some respects. But at 0% the cost, it's awfully, awfully good.

I got an old copy when the computer I worked for upgraded to the package online and didn't have any use for it. I also bought the PS lite that doesn't do color separation. If you are in any graphic arts business, you have no choice. My copy is over 10 years old, but so is my PC.

I remember back in 1991, when I was working on a Mac network. We could install it on all of the machines, but if you were working in it and somebody else opened it yours would close and you would lose everything you had done.

As you mentioned, it is, on fact, free. I'm stubborn and poor frugal.

Digital feudalism. Barons, fiefs, vassals, and serfs. America is actually turning feudalist but I won't dig into writing a 20 page brief on that.
Instead, I'll say: use Linux. GIMP, Blender and choose free and open source software. Only support freedom-respecting software. This is harder in practice but is the only way. Within the next decade you won't own a car, a house (except those grandfathered in), physical media, and every attempt will continue to be made to house all your personal data unencrypted in central servers and aid in a national implementation of a social credit score.

Standard software license. You've never owned software or had any right to reverse engineer or modify any of it. Of course we all do to some extent, but that's what all the licenses say. Odd that they want to sell your personal info though; maybe a condition of trial use vs paid?
I agree with Legend; Adobe software (if you do this kind of thing) is too good to not use.
Anyone who thinks online connectivity is a dealbreaker for a game or app hasn't tried MSFS with the streaming scenery on. The entire world has never been rendered this way before; it's astonishing.

There was a program for photo editing many years ago that was as much better than Photoshop as Photoshop is from everything else. But the PS file format is proprietary and the other program wasn't compatible, so it died. It was called Color Studio.

Same song, different verse.
Quicken locked me out, until I sign up for an annual fee. I refuse. I have been using spreadsheets since the mid 80's.

I tried GIMP but I found it was far too slow on my computer (which isn't slow). Photoshop is instantaneous.

I tried GIMP but I found it was far too slow on my computer (which isn't slow). Photoshop is instantaneous. Interesting. Too slow doing certain things, or anything at all? Like Emily, I've found it slow when exporting, but otherwise haven't noticed any particular slowness. But I don't work with particularly large files. Photoshop was never instantaneous for me. It was fast, but not instantaneous, despite giving its cache its own, dedicated SSD to use, as recommended, but it's been 6-7 years now. Might be different now.

I found it slow for general ANYTHING...no idea what was going on. But ever since I updated to Big Sur everything slowed down for some reason, and I don't know why. That said, PS is still instantaneous (but I didn't have it before I updated to Big Sur).

PS light is only $99 and does everything most people need. But even with that Adobe wants an indenture on your DNA, plus your first-born.
