I saw this motorcycle in the parking lot while I was waiting for my wife. The owner came out and we spoke for about 10 minutes about it. This is a 2000 Ural motorcycle with a side car. The machine is made in Russia and the design dates back to WW II. very cool vehicle.

Very cool to see one in the States, the design looks like they may have borrowed the plans from BMW a little bit.

It is said the quality has improved these days. A friend had one from the Soviet era and I have NEVER seen a bike that was such a total mess! They were guranteed to have engine failure between 300 and 3000 kilometers! I don´t know how many times he has rebuild that engine... But when they run they are fun to ride!

Great bike! There's a guy that rides around here with his Jack Russell in the side car ... very cool.

Frank, the man who owns the bike in the picture told me it has been very reliable. The bike sells for about US$16,000.00 and comes with 1 and 2 wheel drive. Here's another interesting vehicle made in the USA. The Elio is a 3 wheel car that should look familiar to you. www.eliomotors.com/

Then then must have improved the quality a LOT. I am lost for words what a mess these outfits were in the Soviet era. The Elio looks awesome and at the price it seems to be a steal. Too bad it will cost at least double when (if) it hits Germany.

I was expecting something like the old Fiat 3 wheel. This Elio actually looks quite smart!

The Ural is very improved in the last few years. I know a couple of owners. They are not for the interstate but great for backroads and dirt roads. They still come with a complete tool kit that will allow you to completely disassemble it on the side of the road just in case. I have been watching the Elio for years and there's been nothing but press releases and promises. I will believe it when I see it on the road.

ADVrider site has a section on it for Ural owners, reliability is not common with them.

A year or so back, I saw this video and was impressed, and spoke of it to a manager at work that is an avid bike rider... he said that reliability issues made the bike a no-go for his consideration....but based on what is said here now, maybe he spoke of them in their "AMF" era like Harley had.

Those Russian roads look a lot like ours in Pennsylvania.

I refrained from commenting about the poor reliability of HD. I recently talked to a HD mechanic who said that they still have enough issues to keep him working lots of overtime.

My VALKYRIE ate the Harley's up and spit em out, no loud pipes, silent and deadly.

The Ural is much improved, but that doesn't mean that it is maintenance free like a Honda. You are still going to have to go over it and tighten bolts, lube the suspension, and other things. Probably about like a 1980s Italian bike. Then again, it's a unique experience. I looked at them seriously but bought a 2007 Triumph Bonneville. All the joy and none of the hassles. I put a dual-sport tire on the back and it was a blast on dirt and gravel roads and would still cruise 90 all day on the interstate. The Ural isn't for everyone, but it is great for some people.

If I recall correctly, Urals with side cars are actually powered two wheel drive with a reverse gear. That seems handy.
There is no reason Urals could not have better quality control except that the plant is ancient and the machinery is WWII vintage stuff.
This is a real hobbyist motorcycle. You gonna spend as much time tinkering as riding. That is not a bad thing.
Ditto for Royal Enfield.

I delivered a crated Royal Enfield to a guy (modern production), it was a beauty, classily looked like a 1960's era bike, but had modern components...when I told a busy at work about it who rides a bike, he said ""I hope he likes to tinker".

Having installed a complete erector set to hold my body together I am not looking to ride a bike again. I was tempted in 2005 by the Triumph Bonneville made it all the way into the dealership.

I test rode an Enfield years back when there was a dealer in Santa Fe. About what one would expect from a 500cc, single cylinder. Tranny was balky and takes finesse to shift. A little tricky to start when cold. In other words, a faithful reproduction of a 1950s/1960s English motorcycle.
