I'll be the first to admit that my smoking repertoire could be described as a bit eclectic. Albeit leaning towards English, Balkan, Lakeland, with a fair portion of VaPers, some Aro's and unashamed Codger Blends.
All of that being said, I found myself purposefully not opening another tin of Dunhill MM965 here recently, after I finished up one and put it on the shelf. I was thinkin to myself, "hey, considering the fact that you've amassed a reasonably modest baccy cellar, you should be diggin more into the other blends you have vs always having 965 throughout the week". This all despite the fact that I've got half a dozen Dunhill tins and a dozen or so of the Peterson's.
After finishing up a bowl of a bulk offering of an "English" from one of my local B&M's this evening, I still found myself wanting. I spent a good 20 minutes or so digging through my cellar, looking for something else to pop open and give er a whirl, nothing seemed to ring the bell.
So, alas, I've decided to give in to my base instinct and "Smoke What I Like" !
Dunhill MM965 tin popped, Hercules stuffed, Match struck, and...... Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
Unapologetically satisfied.
cheers

I was searching my cellar today too. Besides discovering that I have way more tobacco than I will ever smoke, I have a lot that I just don't want to smoke. I really like about a half dozen blends.

That's the point I want to get to. Unfortunately, I'm just not that far along, yet. Too many things I haven't tried.

Maybe 100 blends a good may gifts of tins and samples from others trying to find my palate. I do not like to smoke just one blend but enjoy tobaccos from many different categories. I have gained most of my knowledge and experience because of this forum in the last year plus that I have been on it.

I've been on a sampling kick lately, and set aside some of my favorites. I recently went back to my some of my standard English blends (Nightcap, Star of the East, Voodoo Queen) and remembered why I enjoy them so much. There are many more blends that I want to try, but I am at the point where I want to slow down and finish up what I have opened before popping the lid on a new blend. I must have about 20 or so sampling blends currently open.
Going forward, I think I'm going to stick with my favorites, and only have one or two samples of other blends open at a time.

I have approximately 200 pounds of tobacco cellar'd at 32 years old. Fortunately, I don't really have anything cellar'd that I don't like to smoke but I do have so much tobacco that at times it can take me months to get back to something I wish I could smoke everyday. Even my favorite 10 blends, I don't smoke all the time, and I'm very fortunate for the selections we have in the pipe tobacco market of today. I cellar hard and fast because the prices are ever increasing, and very likely soon to face more legal issues. For many years I avoided buying any high end pipes because I learned early on that no pipe outsmokes a corn cob, and for each $30-50 spent for a pound of tobacco I was that much closer to my goals in cellaring. I don't foresee any legal issues in buying pipes in the future, and if tobacco gets 10x the tax, or even outright banned I could readily see pipes becoming a HELL of a lot cheaper in 5-10 years. I am not very picky in tobaccos in general. bonanzadriver I started out pipesmoking with MM965 and while I do like it I haven't bought any for years as I quickly leaned more towards VaPers, VA flakes, and then burley blends. I think I'm fortunate as well for the fact that my favorite blends are those that I seeked out in readily available Cornell & Diehl American tobaccos. I do take pride in buying mostly Cornell & Diehl blends, and supporting them just as I did with McClelland before they went out of business. I find solace in the fact that Haunted Bookshop, Old Joe Krantz, Pegasus, Morley's Best, cube-cut burley, G.L. Pease blends could heartily satisfy me until I die and that if I'm spared, I'll have nearly a 30 year supply of my favorite tobaccos within another year or two. Truth be told, with 200+ pounds of tobacco and 200+ pipes, I could just as easily live the rest of my life smoking corn cob pipes and the "Holy Trinity" of Cornell & Diehl Bob Runowski mixtures and be right as rain.

It is good to know what you like and what you can live with for the coming years...the only thing that was missing in my cellar was some Irish Condor and it looks like I have found another smoker that just happens to have some for trade...I'm so excited I could get up on the roof and holler!
Yeah, pathetic ain't it?

I could see pipes going the exact opposite direction under those circumstances. There wouldn't be enough money left in the market to keep them in production. Unless makers/distributors/sellers just have a desperate need to unload all inventory in the briefest possible time, I would expect the last available pipes to go the way of McClelland tins. You'd have to search high and low for them in some kind of shop (presumably not tobacconists, perhaps antiques dealers), and then pay a scarcity premium.
