okay, i've heard that the syrian latakia is almost gone, but there is still cyprian latakia. So my question is, is there much of a difference?

People tend to want what they can't have.I really don't know if there's a difference.I just love Latakia. But some folks don't like it at.I don't smoke it in the house because my wife can't stand the smell.When the weather is warm I grab my pipe fill it with a good Latakia blend and head to the porch..I'm sure some one here can explain the difference between the two for you.

At this point it doesn't matter since Cyprian is all we have. I like the smoky quality of Latakia. I especially like it when it's blended with other Orientals from Macedonia and Basma or Turkish. The problem with Syrian stuff is that the trees used to "smoke" the tobacco are all gone. The political environment is Syria doesn't help either.

I read GL Pease or some other famous blender liken one to a fine port, and the other to a fine brandy. Not that I would be able to tell the difference in the smoke, but as pa says, it's all Cyprian now, so a moot point. My favorite tobaccos tend to be Lat heavy blends, though I didn't like them at first during my aromatic phase

Thanks Justin, that was the exact article I was referring to. Got the GL Pease right, but he says port and sherry, so I was off on that.

thanks for the info! I'm not keen on latakia. I don't mind it in small quantities, but hubby hates it. However, he has to go to annual training at some point this year, and maybe chaplain assistant school, so I will have opportunities to be a naughty girl and smoke forbidden tobaccos, bwahahahaha! I am considering trying Frog Morton Cellar, that of all the descriptions appeals the most to me.

There is a website that sells whiskey barrel cubes for beer making, I have yet to order some but I intend on using them in my bulk McCl 5110 Dark English and see what a few years aging will do!

and maybe chaplain assistant school, We had a club member who was a Chappies Assistant and he really liked his job. He (married to a pipe smoker) was lifer who was stationed at our base for a couple of years before getting transferred out west. I couldn't taste the difference side by side with the two 3Oakes but many think the Syrian in the remaining mixtures has been cut significantly with Cyprian.

ah. that would make it difficult.
he is excited about the position, and so is the chaplain, remains to be seen if he gets a seat in the school. reservists are frequently bumped out by active duty. he's been bumped twice from the school he needs in order to be promoted, and there is only one school a year

I believe that the only Syrian Latakia in existence is sitting in the Barns of MacBaren...they have had it warehoused since only God knows when.....I bought a pound a year ago on the advice of Cobguy, glad that I did...it is a fine smoke. It looks like both P&C and Smokingpipes.com are out of stock on the bulk option is this a harbinger?
www.smokingpipes.com/pipe-tobacco/mac-baren/HH-Vintage-Syrian-1.75oz/product_id/169566If you would like some Margaret, send me a pm with your address. The nice ting about English/ lat blends is that they tend to smoke cool for me, so if I fail to be a disciplined smoker and scorch my mouth, these blends tend to carry me through without further damage.

If you just wanted to dip your toe, McClelland TGL is about the closest bulk I've ever tried to the Frogs and a couple ounces would be inexpensive; however, it's a little sweeter IMHO.

I don´t care as long as I get this earthy, smoky, sour taste of a black leaf! Can there be too much Lat in a mixture? Hell no, I´d smoke it pure.... In fact this thread made me grab a Dunhill and fill it with one of my hodge podge Lat blends.

if I understood the P&C email I got the other day they have just bought up all the MacBaren tobacco with latakia in it. Or maybe it was McClelland....

as a longtime lataholic....& probably similar to GLP article, I've tried to narrow it down.
Syria = figs/raisins
Cypress = woodsy, campfire.
For whatever reason(s), I've never found the latakia in any of the Frogs, Bombays or any other English type from McClellands. Probably cause it's more "refined". Probably in my case, since introduced to "English" in '64 (original 965 & other Dunnies), my palate is probably near gone......but continue to love the stuff.

If they didn't wanna get out from under the Syrian Latakia, they might of had stock to mix with for years. I am clueless and don't really care as i am a person gives thumbsup or down on ratings. Though it is odd to see Syrian Latakia in emailings from pipe retailers!
