Had to replace a stem here (pearwood pipe). Tenon modification was no problem but as photo shows, the stem face diameter is a bit larger than the pipe shank. My first preference would be to band the shank with something that would minimize the difference. As a last resort I might modify the stem if there is a good method. Anyone done this?

No photo, but I haven't had to do that yet. Maybe our pipe makers will chime in. I'd like to know, too.

Really the only thing I can see to do is stem modification. Carefully narrow it with a belt or disc sander and 80-120 grit then polish out. Your idea of a band could work, but IMHO that would require a sleeve on the shank all the way back to the bowl, and more careful fitting. Either way its going to be quite a job.
Just my thoughts.
Honestly, I might just leave it as is if it was mine.

Probably the best option really.

That's what I was thinking too - or get one that is as close as possible and modify THAT.
