Greetings fellow Pipe smokers!
We trust that you had a great Christmas, and a Happy New Year!
At our pipe club meeting this month, we will be having a slow smoke contest.
Pipe Club Meeting: Saturday, January 8th at 1 PM.
What is a pipe smoking contest?
To outsiders, a pipe smoking contest (otherwise known as a slow smoke) is one of the most boring things in the world to watch. It is right up their with watching paint dry, or watching grass grow. Nonetheless, it is a highly competitive contest where the object is to keep your pipe lit longer than anyone else. It is not unusual for contestants to smoke for over an hour, and the international contests often run for over three hours.
Everyone gets a corncob pipe to compete with thanks to Steve Mumaw. Three grams of tobacco, and two matches. They have five minutes to load their pipes with tobacco, and one minute to light their pipes with the provided matches. After that, it is up to the skill of the smoker to keep his pipe lit. Smoke too fast and you run out of tobacco. Smoke too slow and the pipe can go out on you.
The winner is the last person still smoking. The first one to have his pipe go out often winds up with a consolation prize of a bunch of matches. (Obviously, he or she needs them.)
There will also be prizes for 1st,2nd, and 3rd place with the first place winner getting to select which prize that he or she would want, on to 2nd, etc... If anyone has something that they would like to donate, let me know in a private email. otherwise, we will have 3 tins of tobacco.
Pipe Night: Wednesday, January 19th at 5 PM.
Wednesday night meetings are a great way to get over hump day and glide into the weekend, I envy the ability of my fellow pipe smokers to attend this one....I am always on an overniter for work on Wednesdays.
We hope to see you all there, invite a friend if so inclined.
