A good friend just gave me two Kaywoodie Super Grain pipes that according to my brief research on the pipedia.org date back to 1947. Both pipes appear to be very lightly used and both have the “drinkless” permanent filter feature onboard. My question is whether I should put them into rotation with my other pipes or if I should avoid smoking with them. I would hate to commit heresy in the off chance that these are rare-ish pieces. Thanks in advance!

I'm no expert, but I don't think there is such a thing as a rare, collector-grade Kaywoodie. One of my former students gave me a pre-WWII straight billiard, and after I took a hacksaw to the stinger it went right into the rotation. It's a good, reliable pipe.

I'd give them a cleaning with some Everclear on pipe cleaners or 91% isopropyl or higher and start smoking them. I would not remove the stingers and keep them in factory condition. Up to you.

I've got a few myself. Clean them really well (I use the kosher salt/Everclear treatment for the bowl and Everclear and pipe cleaners for the shank and stem), and enjoy them.

Load them up and enjoy. I've got an old 5196 prince shape that is in line for a good cleaning before adding to the rotation. I inherited a number of pipes from my late uncle that have stingers, and have had no issues with them. Most of the time I remember they have a stinger when I go to clean them and can't push a pipe cleaner through.

Smoke 'em if you got 'em. After cleaning, try them with the stingers for while. You can always cut them later. I've left them on all of mine. I thought I'd hate the constricted draw, but it seems ok.

We, the Kaywoodie restoration society, believe every Kaywoodie is priceless. A pipe from a different era, that speaks to the generations, the Kaywoodie is AMERICA!!!! By downgrading the revered Kaywoodie, one is therefore downgrading AMERICA!!! Someday the entire Kaywoodie line will rise to collector prominence, because that's AMERICA!!!
PS Yes give it a few years, your Kaywoodies might be worth triple what they fetch today or even more... All part of Joe Kaywoodie's Build a Better Beauty....Kaywoodie improvement plan ... Got love that!! So, come on man!!! Save your Kaywoodies!!😀

Sir, I have an old Kaywoodie and I smoke it. I like it. Although I'm not sure what the, "Drink less" system is?

Sir, I have an old Kaywoodie and I smoke it. I like it. Although I'm not sure what the, "Drink less" system is? The “Drinkless System” branding is engraved on the permanently fitted filter apparatus aka the stinger attached to the stem on both of my Kaywoodie SuperGrain examples. I believe that there are pics and an accompanying paragraph on Pipedia covering it. Contemporaneous marketing materials supporting the Kaywoodie line promised that the Drinkless system “…prevented the bitter juices from the burned tobacco from entering the smoker’s mouth while substantially cooling the smoke…” I have yet to sanitize the two estate Kaywoodies in my stable, so I cannot yet report on the veracity of these marketing claims. As a personal aside, I assure you that the use of a Kaywoodie SuperGrain will not cause me to drink less under any circumstances. 😏

I own no pipes that I wouldn't/haven't smoked and I never would. Just my opinion.

I purchased a Kaywoodie Chesterfield in 1970 and have been happily smoking it since. We have been through many adventures . One of my favorites pipes. Perhaps the bowl has been scrapped a little more than I should have, still smokes great.

I picked up the Everclear and other supplies to give my Kaywoodies and two other estate pipes I picked up on Ebait yesterday. I’ll be doing the alcohol and salt treatment this weekend. I look forward to smoking them late next week.

Kaywoodies are amazing, if you clean the stinger they smoke fine. The 4-hole stingers smoke the best but all of them work. People that complain usually aren't cleaning them out properly. I would highly recommend not cutting the stinger as it ruins the style of the pipe and tanks the value if you ever want to sell it. There are millions of pipes without stingers, no need to cut the ones with it!

lose the filter and smoke away! I always get rid of stingers, never liked them.
