Sad to hear. He was, as they say, a classic.

I am sorry to read this.
The man never made a bad movie or turned in less than a masterful appearance. Even going back to 1952 or so with the movie "No Way Out" with Richard Widmark.
He was a very decent man in person. I used to see him at Gelson's Supermarket in Studio City, CA. He would be joking and chatting with the Checkers and clerks. Just a regular guy doing his shopping.
We all go sooner or later and there will be a special performance in Heaven tonight!

He did so many great films, but one of my favorites was "In the Heat of the Night". Not only did Sidney give a strong performance but another of my favorite actors, Rod Steiger did too. I guess I should mention "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" too. Great fun! He will be missed...

Another interesting film of his is "The Bedford Incident", 1965. A totally "color blind" script. That made it unique for the times.

He was always a gentleman, dignified and intense. +1 He seemed like a good guy, my first experience was "Lilies Of The Field".

They building contractor, the guy who hired Schmidt and provided the building materials was actually the Producer of the movie. As of 1987 The Chhhhappell was still there where it was built for the movie.
