If someone wants some real stink and lung closures, inhale right after striking a match. Most that use matches know to strike, hold away for a moment till all chemicals dissipate, then apply to whatever you're lighting up. Same with a Zippo. After ignition, chill, apply & smoke. No difference. Unless you want there to be. Good point. But doing the Andrew Dice Clay light is so much cooler.

I love Bic lighters, they work 100% of the time, no fuss, no mess. I'm like Larry...flick my Bic... they work every time.

My 4 have been trouble free. Most people don't post positive reviews. How well do the Thunderbirds fit into the Zippo case? They just slide in. They are made for the Zippo cases.

I am a Zippo man and always have been since my Boy Scout days.
Scoutmaster: "How did you start that fire, son?"
Me: "Flint and steel, sir!"
Scoutmaster: "Good Scout!"
I did not lie, just stretched a point.

One kid pulled a road flare out and had a blazing fire long before anyone else. Other scouts: Hey that’s cheating! Scoutmaster: No, that’s being prepared.

For the Order of The Arrow initiation you have to burn your wreath. Mine was green holly. They give you 2 matches. It was a rainy night. I was the only one in my group that burned the wreath. A tin of scout water in my pocket.

Scouting was a good experience for a kid. I hope it still is.

I never made it past First Class.
Highly political, the right kids were advanced and the rest of us forgotten.
I quit at about age 13. We moved to rural northern California and I had my hands full.

That's very unusual. All the kids in my area were poor, but just we had more Eagles than any other troop in Houston. The next in line Troop was wealthy, and sponsored by a church that we later attended, and there was a fund for anything that the kids from poorer families couldn't afford. Once again there weren't any "privileged" kids. I've heard that everything in Chicago was crooked, but I never thought it extended to the Boy Scouts.

I got burnt out in scouting since I was the youngest member of the troop. Everyone else was getting ready for things I couldn’t do to age restrictions. So I was like well I’m done with this. Did get order of arrow and the world wildlife fund conservation award. Cub scouts and weeblo was alot of fun. Boy Scouts not so much.

Thanks for the heads-up about these, Ron. I just got one of the piezo Z light inserts, and so far (Day 1) am pleased. I do like the idea of flints, so I've got one of these Thunderbirds in my Wish List.

I have a thing for lighters so here are mine. The first 5 lighters from left to right are all DuPonts. The next e\ne says Davidoff but in reality it is another Dupoint. The flak\mflame cokes out the side perfect form pipes, and the last one is my first IM Corona Old Boy. I then got addicted to IM Corona Pipemasters. Here are my Pipemasters. I have 2 of these as I thought I lost the first one and then eventually found it. I then bought 4 of this next model as I got one for each kid . When they are responsible enough I will give them one. My oldest son ahs his as his never leaves his room. I will probably buy another for myself when they are on sale whenever.

I would not call it crooked just that some kids were selected for advancement and others not. Wealth was not the criteria. More to do with physical ability, appearance and just being the right kind of kid. Those of us who were not ideal were not included in Order of the Arrow, Weevils or whatever it was called (Wee-blows?), helped on the path to more Merit Badge earning, or even promoted. I do not recall well enough how much family had to do with it. I was young enough to know it was not fair but not aware enough to know the causes. For example, some kids had no trouble getting merit badges others could never muster enough proof they really did swim one mile non-stop or perform other acts.

I'm sorry that you weren't able to have the experience that we had in the 60s. My troop had all races and social levels, yet any boy who worked for it was able to achieve. I screwed around and got kicked out before I could finish my Eagle requirements, but I only blame myself.

In our little Cajun town, who your parents were and money made sure some students excelled even though they had no talent, case in point, javelin thrower, while doing PE I ran and got the javelin and threw it, 20 ft past the best throw of the guy who was on the track team, but alas I was a poor child, my best friend a tall tanned Cajun beat the miler running in jeans and engineer boots by a half a lap, this boy ran home every day ,a 15 mile trip, he would later be a Marine, I a Navy man. Never bothered me much, I knew who I was, F#%CK EM.

That funny lighter that Martha Stewart and Snoop Dog are shilling is actually pretty darn good for pipes.
They're sort of hard to find so I usually use Bics.
Maybe one day will pick up an old boy, the old-schoolness appeals to me
