What's your favorite lighter? I have three nice pipe lighters -- all Old Boys. I have three nice cigar lighters -- a Xikar, a Colibri, and a Lotus. My favorite of the Old Boys is the briar one. It's nifty. My favorite cigar lighter is the Colibri -- not because it does a better job of lighting, but because it's a really pretty blue color. What's yours?

Probably a tie between the arabesque Old Boy and the leather-wrapped Zippo with butane insert.

Any lighter I don't have to hold down to keep lit. I collect angled flame Pipe lighters and I would say this Davidoff Classic Slim angled flame lighter is my favorite I wish I had a photo of this collection.
ST Duponts. The Castello is a highlight of the collection!
Dunhill Rollagas.

Bics, Zippos, a Nimrod, and a Beattie Jet Lighter. I've got two IM Corona old boys but one has a cracked fuel tank from dropping it and the other (arabesque) was purchased just to look at as their flames are thwarted by the mildest of breezes.

Zippo with a pipe insert. I also have a Kiribi Kubuto that is a nice lighter. I mostly smoke outside though, and the Zippo performs better if there is any wind.

I like my Dissim for the angled flame, perfect for me. All of the gas started leaking from under the shroud, I sent an email with proof of purchase and they have a new one on the way same day they told me to toss the leaker, Lifetime warranty.
Impressive herd there, Dave.

I recently converted a couple of old Zippos to the single jet butane, using the replacement inserts from Zippo. I did two of them and they both work like c**p. As I didn't use my Zippos before because I don't like the smell of the fuel I was hoping to correct that problem. Anyway, I have several Dunhill lighters which have always worked like a charm, so I'm not really sure why I went through this exercise. Putting back the old gasoline inserts in my Zippos and shelving them.

The one that came in my leather-wrapped Zippo is a Thunderbird. It works fine. However, it is a bit leaky. Gas doesn't disappear from it nearly as fast as normal Zippo fluid, but it does disappear. YMMV.

After looking at all the reviews on the alternative inserts for Zippo I decided not to waste any more money on this endeavor.

I like my Lotus lighters. Like the smooth operation. Nice easy flame adjustment.

My favorite and daily lighter is a brass armor case Zippo with pipe insert. Previously it was a Smokers Forums lighter of the year for, I think, 2008, like what I have now except chrome with the SF logo engraved on it; that one fell out of a pocket one night years ago when I was walking our late dog through the park, and I was never able to find it. I have a few other Zippos that were given to me over the years, including two from two of my daughters; I should use those sometimes but seldom get around to it.
I used to be intrigued by the old Imco or Bowers lighters, the style commonly called a trench lighter, but never got one.

Bics. I've been given nice lighters and have come back to Bic when they failed. I retrofitted a couple of heirloom Zippos with butane--at least one was Tbird--and went back to Bic when they failed. I'd love to have something nice and reliable, but haven't found it in something I could afford. So, Bics.

A couple of years ago visiting my brother I found out that is the only color he buys. I was enjoying some bowls with sperrytops and he had a very nice gold lighter and I had my Bic. He never batted an eye at my cheep lighter

Well, I'd prefer they were refillable instead of disposable, but as far as setting pipe tobacco on fire, they're as good as anything.

Some of us can afford to collect fabulously expensive pipes and accessories and enjoy doing so. Others can't, or don't care to. It doesn't seem to me that we indulge in looking down on each other or resenting each other; we just smoke what we like and like what we smoke, and enjoy each other's company, virtual or otherwise. Kind of how life ought to be lived.

The other three are estates I acquired quite cheaply and lovingly restored. Also, over the years I acquired some Kiribis, which I find don't perform particularly well, and a bunch of Zippos from my youth. They always perform, I just can't stand the smell of the standard fuel. That's why I've been looking for reliable gas inserts. They have sentimental value.

I was able to cull quite a few disposable lighters from the dump when I was hauling haz waste. I gave away quite a few at the pipe club meeting over a year ago, many were a large supermarket branded disposable that had the refill port.
It is not uncommon to hear at a meeting… “Charlie, still going strong” after numerous refills.
The flints last for a lot of refills.

If someone wants some real stink and lung closures, inhale right after striking a match. Most that use matches know to strike, hold away for a moment till all chemicals dissipate, then apply to whatever you're lighting up. Same with a Zippo. After ignition, chill, apply & smoke. No difference. Unless you want there to be.
