I always knew the day would be coming… another pipe smoker here in a Michigan has reported that P&C charged them the Michigan 30% state tobacco excise tax. After sales tax started getting collected online a while back, I knew this day was coming.
Before anyone starts complaining, purchasers have always been legally required to pay this tax themselves. Since no one did, it was inevitable that they’d start requiring online retailers to collect it. At least, this helps to level the playing field for B&Ms as they have to collect the state tax.

You stated it all very well, John.
A sad reality, but it is what it is. As the gap narrows between online purchases and your local tobacconist, it behooves the pipe smoker to support the local tobacconist.

Unless somebody opens a local one, my business will still go online.

The closest shop, that sells pipe tobacco, to me is 1 1/2 hours away. They carry mostly their own blends, leaving me to look towards Kansas City ~2 1/2 hrs away for more variety.

Yeah, some of us have more options locally. I wish it was the same for all.

I was charged IN state excise tax with my last purchase of 3 tins of Sutliff Crumble Kake #3 from tobaccopipes.com

Yeah… an online tobacconist has to comply, or they will be out of business in short order. A state AG has pretty much unlimited resources to go after someone.

We all owe a ton for our past 10 (or 20, depending on how long you've bought tobacco online) years of online purchases anyway, I'm actually quite happy to see they're adding this to online purchases.

Well I just mean I'd rather be paying it going forward than having the tax man cometh after 10+ years. I mean, of course I've paid all my excise taxes all these years, and what money?!

I really can't imagine that happining, at least not in Texas. I don't know where you live, but I don't think it makes sense for any state to go after individuals. The cost to collect would exceed the amount collected. I doubt that they have the recorders of your tobacco purchases, and the stores can easily lose their records after a year or so.

Yeah, I can see both points.
But, if the states start collecting dues, better to start with a clean slate going forward…. At that point at least you can calculate your expenditures without the fear of a bottom feeder coming after you.

I hadn't purchased anything online since I saw this thread. Stopped at Walgreens and picked up a pouch of CBW. $15+. Got me wondering about how much tax I'd pay online. Just spent $50 ($30 of which was tobacco) and paid only IA state sales tax. $2.94. I guess I should stock up!
