Hello,

I inherited a tobacoo collection and don't know the value. Are tobacoos priced like wine? Was hoping for some help. There are tins, pouches, paper cans and plastic bags a few cigars and such. Various names and years. List is below.

Wow, that's one heck of a collection to go through. A few of those look like you could sell for over USD 25 a tin and others probably wouldn't sell for the cost of shipping. It'd help if you could find out how old some of the more exciting tins are (almost anything over 5 years old is worth at least a little more than new).

Empty tins are pretty much worthless.

Sealed tins that prove to be old can sometimes be valuable. Best to contact Pipestud consignments… easily found on Google. He only resells sealed aged tins upon verification of age.

Partially opened tins, you might be be able to sell locally, or rent a table at a pipe show. Anyone wanting to pull the trigger on that would want to look at it, if it has been opened for any amount of time it could very well be degraded/ dried out.

Full pound bags, the clock is ticking on how long that will stay fresh…maybe a pipe show.

The forum rules here are that you cannot sell after a certain amount of posts.

Edit: cigarillos/ cigars best sold at a pipe show, if they haven’t been stored properly they are unsaleable.

No value in rolling papers.

The sealed McClelland tins are worth $50-65 per 50gram tin depending on the age and the blend.

The 3.5 oz McClelland Frog Morton tins are each worth upwards from $95 per tin, only sealed.

The sealed bag of 16 ounces of Mac Baren Vintage Syrian can fetch around $100 depending on if it's still got a great seal.

The sealed 3.5oz Mac Baren Vintage Syrian tins can fetch somewhere around $30-45, depending on age.

The Captain Earle's blends in new tins would likely fetch around $20 per tin so long as they're dated at least 2016 or older.

The opened tins are basically worthless.
The sealed Dunhill tins are worth a varying amount also determined by age. If they can be dated older than 2016 then they'll be worth approximately $30-50 but depending on just how old they are.

Pretty much everything else is going to be a wash and be worth nearly what they are brand new and available today. McClelland is worth so much because it's a discontinued and highly coveted brand, but you can only get these values within the pipe community and no thrift shop or anywhere else would pay you anything at all really for old tobacco. Again, anything open in the tin is worthless. Especially so if it's been opened for months or longer.

Pipestud.com is your best point of contact for the McClelland and Dunhill sealed tins. Best of luck to you.

EDIT: 1 x 1975 Murrays Erinmore Flake 2 oz sealed tin NEW - This tin would have to be appraised in order to give an estimate, likely to fetch nearly $100+ (Have seen Erinmore tins from 70's-80's go for around $60-75)

All 50g McClelland tins fetch $50 per tin, the few exceptions are $40 at the lowest if they were the last 2017 production year and one of the least wanted blends, usually aromatics. The Frog Morton blends and the Black Parrot Ashton Revival tins this person has listed as 50g sealed tins will fetch at least $65 per tin, no problem.

$50-60 per 50g McC tin is pretty well locked in at this point. You could sell every last 50g tin you can find for $50, all day.

Tinned aromatics don't lose their flavor at all. I think you are referencing the bags of McClelland's, those are worthless.

The only tobaccos you're going to make any money on are sealed HH Vintage Syrian and sealed McClellands. Anything used or opened would have to be inspected before purchase. That is, if the buyer were being careful. Other sealed, if Virginias or Burleys, might bring a fair price if older. I wouldn't touch an open tin or bag unless it were coming from a known source. I'm not sure what 1 oz Used means. Are these samples?

Yes, if anything is open or in a bag it's not worth anything having been stored like that. McClelland, the whole company went out of business in 2017 so it's been in that bag like at least 5 years. The type of blend that it is, is also not a sought-after McClelland tobacco.

Tins seal better than bags, basically. The tobacco in tins will be in better shape than what's in bags.
