If you may not..If You may not know. It's a unit folks here in the south use for heat and air conditioning..It does both. When my son and I moved into this house a few months ago we knew that the unit here had to be replaced..This week I got it done..Now I have about 7,000 dollars less in the bank..I'm warm though.

Holey, moley, Larry. But, being warm is important. Was it just the air exchanger or a whole new furnace?

I feel your pain! We unexpectedly had to replace our rooftop package unit on our house in SoAZ. We drove down for a week and walked into a 100 degree oven. It was a nightmare but we got lucky that the contractor who said it was dead couldn't install a new one that day so we called around and saved about half of what that dealer quoted us.

Ouch, Larry! That's quite a chunk. I don't think ours was that expensive for a 2000 sq ft 2-story.

My buddy owns his own HVAC company and he told me the average price should be calculated that 1000 BTU's equals 1000.00. When I bought my first house in Florida I had 2 units on the house. One was 2500 and the bigger one was 5000. It was a big house at 4,000 square feet with 6 bedrooms.
I had to go for 2 new units and my buddy also told me try and get Trane units. I had 11, 5000 BTU units on my plaza and all the units were Trane's. My pool heater also needed replacement and that was 5500 Btu's if memory serves I paid 5000 grand or so for it.

We have a room added on that didn't get central air and heat. We put in a mini-split heat pump and it works great heats when it needs heat and cools when it gets hot. Always keeps the room comfortable and totally silent.

That's a chunk of change. Ouch. At least you knew it was coming, though. And if the old one was very old at all, your new one will work a lot better and cost less to run. Heat pumps have come a long way.

My neighbor had his A/C replaced, they convinced him (Home Depot subcontractor) that he should have a dual unit installed… 10 grand.
I have roughly the same square footage, my guy added an extra air return in the upper bedroom (vaulted ceiling) that trapped heated air in the master bedroom. Replaced air handling unit, single heat pump and it was $3.500.00. Air management or lack thereof was my biggest problem.
You are swimming in shark infest waters with some of these guys…. Especially in Arizona where A/C is a necessity.

Those mini-splits Ron mentioned are getting to be pretty amazing little doozers. I wouldn't be surprised if 10 or 15 years down the road, most new-home construction uses those instead of a big central unit and ductwork.

And I didn't need to buy a vacuum pump.

I hear you bro.
I am of the mindset of hiring capable tradesmen to do my work. Their work comes with a warranty should things go south.
But the simplicity of the procedure informs me of what to expect and calculate the cost if that takes place.
