Hi I am a cigar smoker but like the idea of mixing my tobacco to get the ideal taste. this is why I'm dipping my toe into pipe smoking. Any advice on beginner pipes and tobacco would be a great help.

Welcome from Northern California, US. Good luck on your new pipe journey. Plenty of folks here willing to offer some sage advice. And I'll leave that to the wizards of our crowd.

Hi Robert. Welcome from Michigan. I'd try an inexpensive pipe, like a corncob, and one of the tobacco samplers from GQ Tobaccos, based in the UK. Enjoy the journey.

Thank you all for your help and comments. I have a few sampler selections I'm looking at and I'm just going to randomly pick one and see what I like best. pipe wise, I've heard corn cobs are the way to go and I've heard it so much that I will probably get one in the future just to try out but honestly, I want something a bit sleeker. can anyone vouch for GQ's own brand of pipes? they look good and in my price range for a first-time pipe here's the one I'm looking at: www.gqtobaccos.com/tobacco-pipes/gq-tobaccos-truffle-briar-bent-pipe/

Also, there's a long, long tradition of pipe shops in London selling pipes under their name that were made in some of the best factories. So, on the circumstantial evidence alone, I'd be willing to give them a try. Nobody wants to waste $25-35 (sorry, don't know the key combo for the Pound sign), especially on a brand new hobby. But, ultimately, it's not that much more than a cob. That's about as cheap as you can get a briar pipe. If that one catches your eye, give it a try. If you don't like it, you can probably sell it to johnlawitzke .

A little out of my price range for my first pipe, I want to be £40 - £45 for pipe, tobacco and a poker tool. If I get into pipe smoking then my cigar fund becomes my pipe fund and then ill be looking at some choice pieces to pick up.

Well, look at the basket pipes and get something from Italy or St. Claude France.

At Gq, he is still able to offer all of the Sam Gawith, and Gawith Hoggarth tobaccos and I'd suggest getting a few of those and maybe reaching out to Glen for recommendations for starters. He'll likely point you in the right direction.

adding greets/welcome from 50miles East of Buffalo, NY. Pipe/cigar since 1962, started with the pipe after my promising distance running "career" ended with two bulging disks, cannot do anything vertical but do race-walking when an event occurs. Favor all varieties of English, Balkan, heavy on the latakia.
As an aside, was on the 1961 touring track team. In the 5000m, against Bannister's pacemakers, Chris Chataway & Brasher. Beat Brasher, Chataway won it. Hope others can help you more than could I Ed Duncan, Batavia, NY 81 & upright my "motto"

A great club if you are nearby. They have awesome giveaways, and Sam Gawith regularly brings a ton of tobaccos to the meetings. pipecluboflondon.com/

Welcome to the Patch, Bob...good luck with your first pipe and tobacco choice. If you first blend doesn't work out, just seal it up in a mason jar and save it; your taste buds can take a few twists and turns over time.

Well, if you find yourself in the area, drop in for a spell. I live in Arizona, and am a member...I will be dropping in sometime in the next year or so...if it doesn't require a vax card to travel there.....I have the antibodies the old fashioned way.

Heck, I've driven 200+ miles for lunch.
