So I have recently gotten into specialty coffees.
I am not a fan of all the fiddling around needed to make a cup of coffee, but I have to acknowledge that the coffee made is really great. If I win the lottery I will hire a staff to do all the coffee making for me, and now I know what coffee i would have them make. Heck, they can load my pipe as well!
But occasionally it is kind of fun. As long as I have my K-cups to fall back on when I just want to wake up.
What I really want to talk about is combinations. I recently had a cup of fresh Sumatra Mandheling coffee made in a pour over. I know yada yada. But the coffee was good. I was smoking Rimboche S.J., and the two flavors went together so excellently. The flavors disrupted my meandering thoughts. The coffee helped the tobacco and the tobacco helped the coffee. It was really exceptional. Worth all the fiddling around.
I thought that flat Coke Zero and Billy Budd Blonde went together well. And it does, but not as Mandheling and Rimboche S.J.
I have done this three times since the discovery, and it is so totally worth the fiddling. Worth all the fiddling.
I am now officially a fiddly coffee fanboy, if only for this particular pipe and cup combination. I am experimenting with others, I will let you know if I can ring the bell again.
So I was thinking we could all list here in this thread some of the great flavor combinations we have discovered. What indulgences enhance the flavor of our smokes. I am talking about more than just a "good together" experience, like bourbon and a pipe. I mean a specific type of bourbon (or whatever) with a certain tobacco, where the two tastes work together so well one wants to repeat the experience over and over. A friend of mine particularly likes a pipe after a slice of pepperoni pizza. He doesn't go on and on like I do about it, but we have many times sat on his porch and indulged in a pizza and pipe afternoon.
If there is someone who understands the chemistry of flavor and can chime in - it would be fun to try and move in informed directions. (If you frequently use words like "umami" you are likely a good candidate to help us all know better what to look for here.)

I'm usually drinking cold filtered water, or coffee while smoking pipes or cigars. I'd have to say that really only coffee pairs with tobaccos. I've never found whiskey or beers to pair with tobacco, but rather detract from it. Wine destroys nice tobacco profiles in my experience. Some guys here months back were drinking milk while smoking. You know who you are!

I can't say as I've paid close attention to what pairs well, but I'll venture to disagree with Zach on purely personal and anecdotal evidence. While I do enjoy coffee (my students and coworkers both have admitted astonishment at my pot-or-so-a-day habit), I enjoy whiskey with a pipe far more than I do coffee and a pipe. I wonder if this has anything to do with my predilection for English/Balkan blends. Do people who predominately smoke aromatics prefer coffee with their pipe? Do English blend smokers prefer alcohol as an accompaniment?
Also, I wonder what the differences in how one drinks their coffee affects their choice. I prefer mine 'hamartiological;' hot as Hell, black as sin, strong as death, and bitter as iniquity. Is there a statistically significant difference between people who adulterate their coffee and those who do not in their preferred tobacco blends?
I sense the basis for a good research study here...

This still isn't to say that there aren't numerous drink and pipe or cigar combos that aren't great. Plenty of teas, citrusy/hoppy beers, whiskeys etc. go fine or even great with a pipe. The citrusy spectrum I find goes great with Virginias. Coffee with burley, Virginia, and latakia. For years on end in my early to mid 20's I bar hopped and drank just about every alcohol with every pipe tobacco or cigar on the market and to be sure, there are good pairings. It's more that I came to view cold water or coffee as being the best drink to cleanse my palate and not detract and compete with my tobacco flavors. I rarely drink alcohol today compared to my first six years or so of piping so this has quite a bit to do with it. My tobacco preference in pipe tobaccos and cigars has always leaned towards the strong in nicotine and natural tobacco flavors so it was always twist/bogie, dark plug, Old Joe Krantz, burleys with whiskey, Guinness Foreign Extra, very hoppy bitter beers, etc. with the bitterness of strong nicotine pairing to tannin and bitter flavors in my preferred drinks. My least favorite tobaccos are any without nicotine.

I prefer English blends and the scotch goes quite well with it. However I have noticed that coffee goes very well with my straight virginias and a good hearty pot of black tea tends to meld nicely with some Va/Pers....just my $0.02 for the data points.

Pipe and coffee, pipe and whisky, pipe and martini. They all work for me. Pipe and milk, not so much. Even pipe and soda.

I like this phrasing. I had before only encountered the (supposedly Turkish) formula "black as hell, strong as death, sweet as love," which--since I take my coffee as you do--I had to adapt to the country-and-western version ("... bitter as love").
But I digress.
Again.

I get the jitters after half a cup but mrslax has a coffee cup permanently attached to her hand and we drink and recommend coffee from Barrie House Coffee Rosters from NYC every day. I don’t care for a pipe and soda the acidity of the cola messes with me. Just makes it taste off. Now seltzer water no issue.

Usually a water drinker when I'm sitting with a pipe (I'm often walking while smoking, so don't have a beverage at all then.)
But I've found one winning combination: a dark-roast coffee with cream, paired with Peretti's Cambridge Flake (a very malty, red VA/xanthi/Latakia flake). When I'm in the mood to just sit in the yard and smoke a pipe, this is now my go-to combo.

Pretty much any beverage I am good to go with when smoking a pipe, but milk would not be first on the list for me.

Yes to whiskey, coffee or some combination thereof. I prefer all my caffeine beverages to be unsweetened -- I think a sugar drink would compete with the taste of most tobaccos.
I've found that the darker black teas (assam, keemun) go well with a pipe.

I must start by saying that EVERYTHING pairs well with bourbon in my opinion, but I had an interesting experience last year. I usually don't smoke until later in the evening, but I was renovating a room in my house and needed a break. I was drinking a Gatorade, the yellow one, lemon lime? I can't remember what it is off hand and I lit a pipe.
I suffer from having rapidly desensitized taste and smell with most tobaccos as I'm smoking, but as I smoked and drank that Gatorade, after every sip, it seemed my tastebuds were reset and smoking was a lot more fun. I'm not saying it made the tobacco any better or worse or that it "paired", but I loved the effect and occasionally drink the yellow gatorade with a pipe just for the heightened flavor experience.

I must start by saying that EVERYTHING pairs well with bourbon in my opinion. But some pairings are exceptional. I think that Bulleit pairs extremely well with strong coffee. Old Grand Dad pairs amazingly well with hamburgers. Basil Hayden I have found pairs really well with my beloved Billy Budd Blonde tobacco.

I completely agree and that got me thinking of some of my favorite tobacco pairings. Ezra Brooks Rye with Capstan Gold (also great with Ascanian Castle Blend No. 2 and Reiner 71 Long Golden Flake) The peppery and oaky nature of the Rye just makes some of the subtle aspects of the lighter Virginias sing for me. Also, Four Roses with Karl Erik No. 16, one of the most enjoyable no food, alcohol/tobacco only dessert experiences I can think of.

Zarnicky like ice tea with pipe. I sipping both slowly. As for milk... Zarnicky only drink milk directly from cow.
Tobacco flavour much better when you sip slowly. Mr. Zarnicky (Chuckles) smokes fast like vacuum cleaner. He likes Latikia tobacco. I always know when he’s smoking because while he does, he grunting like pig.
“Wheee! Wheeee! Dis tobacco so good!”
He also mooing like cow.
“Ummm oooooh, Dis great tasting smoke!”
Chuckles have bad manners. When he drinking with straw he slurping very loudly. I tell him sip slowly and not slurp.
Now I know why he was not breast-fed.
