I have never seen anything that you have posted that I wouldn't be proud to own.

OMG, you read through all of the thread? Absolutely. I know I'll eventually want to try my hand at making my own pipe down the road (lots of projects on the to do list for the time being) so it was neat to read through your experience.

It would be nice to have another pipe carver/maker here. adui and I might be the only ones at the moment. Cramptholomew drops in from time to time. rdpipes used to drop in frequently, but he's stopped making pipes (I heard a rumor he might start up again). Those two are true artisans. An easy way to start is to get a predrilled and stemmed block. That's where I started. My daughter and son-in-law got me a couple kits for Christmas a couple years ago.

Doesnt help that I haven't had time in the shop in a while... I have several stem repairs in the works. Maybe I should send pics of these refurbishings! In any case I agree with Silver. Someone who carves please post her!

I'm still around. I check in every day or so. Tagging me will get my attention!

Started working on another one. It'll be a freehand bent Dublin, similar to the last one I made. This one will get a dark stain (walnut-ish) and a caramel brown stem. More pics as things progress. Thanks for looking!

Stain it, and give that stem a slight downward bend, and I'll go check the weight of my piggy-bank!

Looking promising, Pete. Be interesting to see how the faux plateau turns out.

Pipe #2 came about a year later. I bought a couple kits with plateau to try my hand at making a freehand pipe. While roughing the block, i had forgotten how difficult it is to control the cut with the scroll saw (I really should buy a band saw). The blade wandered a little before I realized how off course it was. That scar in the first photo is the result of my wandering saw blade. At the time, I cleaned it up and figured I'd have to live with it. I like the character of some scars/nicks/wear. Makes the pipe look like it has more character...

I ended up carving a couple channels in that stummel to get rid of that scar. To be honest, I rarely even look at that pipe. Its sitting in a bowl with others made around the same. time. I may revisit them later, to possibly refine them. I dunno...

Turned out fantastic Pete! The stain really highlights the grain, and you got a good do on the "faux-plateaux!" Super cool.

Nice work, again, Pete. That stem really suits the stummel.

Pete, I have to admire your commitment to excellence. You're already making pipes beyond my skill and you refuse to sell yet. Keep it up; but rest assured your work is definitely worth the market!!

Back in the workshop, finally. I guess this is pipe #39. It's gonna be a slightly bent billiard (a favorite shape of mine). I know the early stages look strange, but this is what i do without a lathe. I just wanted to post this to get this thread off page 6 and to light a fire under my butt. I'll be back with a few more photos as I make progress. Thanks for looking.

10 minutes on an angle grinder with a 40-grit disc, it looks a little more like a pipe. From here on things get slower and more precise (hopefully).

Spent about 3 hours on this today. I think I'll wait until tomorrow to finish it. Still got a lot of sanding to do, but the shape is pretty much there.
