Finally I figured out photos. I have 2 I bought on Etsy. At $25 a piece it isn’t cheap, but the shovel is strong and thin allowing you to scrape dottle easily from the bowl.

This is my tamper. There are many tampers like it, but this one is mine.
I mainly always use an old standard aluminum pipe nail. It's my favorite overall, but I own a bunch. A bamboo tamper with a brass foot, a Credo pipe tool, Czech pipe tools, shell casings, etc. I just much prefer the old standard little lightweight aluminum pipe nails. I'm using a very old 1970's or very early 1980's Middleton aluminum pipe nail these days.

I have found the Czech tool to be too dull and thick to scrape out the dottle.

I have some fancy tampers that stay at home, I have a penchant for losing them on the go, so the Czech tool is the one I use the most, or a pipe nail.
There was a jeweler in Georgia that posts over at pipesmag, he makes tampers with precious stones…I would hat to lose one of them.

Czech tool almost always. Not great for scraping dottle as msokeefe notes, but good enough for my daily use and fine for everything else, including a surprising number of little non-pipe jobs. And still cheap enough I don't get upset about losing them. I have a Rockwell Binge as well, which is a very nice tool, but losing it would bother me, so I don't take it out much.

Ever since I found these 8Deco bamboo and brass tampers several years ago, I seldom use anything else. Long enough for tall bowls, and the tamper has holes in it so you can puff while tamping. Haven't found anything better as far as function goes. Nothing special in the looks department though...

I keep my very first Czech tool in the car. Its been lost and bent up in the washing machine more times than I can count. I always have an aluminum nail (the square kind) in my pocket. I have some tampers from Walt that I use around the house. Those are as fancy as I get.

(Inert) I use a 5.56 casing when I'm in the yard and forget to grab a normal tamper. There's a stockpile of them out by the garden

I like it, but it's too wide of a foot for narrower and tapering bowls so I sort of reserve it for huge pipes, plus I have to clean the dottle pick end as it likes to keep tars on it. It's a great tamper, though.

I bet you even drink alcohol! Lol Very rarely. It ceased most of its fun when I became legal to drink it decades ago. The tamper was a gift from a pewter smith.👍

finally decided to put in my lousy .02 worth this thread. Yrs back had neighbor who was purty good carpenter. Made me couple dowels out of a more or less standard length when new. Have 4 at 1/2" wide, for my magnums, 3 at 3/4" wide. All 3" long, all made via hacksaw. Still have 'em all + couple "nails" here/ there. How many yrs ago? I know around '62, anybody's guess which century. Yeah, did see pics of that fella who made really nice tamps. first name I think is "Art". Hawaii looking last name. have several round tip Sheffield pipe knives to get rid of any dottle & scape the sides if/when decide to.
Ed Duncan, Batavia, NY olde age jokes r me!

You’re thinking of my buddy Art Rupelt of Ming-Kahuna. I am a Ming collector and you can see half of my collection on my daveinlax Instagram page. I went a little crazy buying his tampers and doubling my Ming collection at the fall Taurus Pipe Auction. I’ve sold a couple from the auction and will probably cull a few more soon. I also have solid Castello and Dunhill pipe tamper collections. I love tampers and have been collecting them for almost as long as I’ve been collecting pipes.
