I just learned today that the Rural Electric Co-op Meter Reader we have had here for years is legally blind. Apparently, he could not read the numbers on the meter or even which meter he was reading. This from his replacement, a man I know fairly well. So, I am expecting a reduction in my electric bill which actually reflects electric usage. Only in Toad County New Mexico can these things happen.

On this day in 1969 I paused on the way out the door to listen to some guy somewhere say Houston. It was kind of a big deal. Yea it was a big deal, 6 years old and watching it on the TV, I'm not that old, but it seems to be a century ago compared to all the changes at that moment in time. Wow, this makes me a bit sad, and at the same time, it makes me happy with all the great things that have come about in this moment to help humanity in general, What a Great time in history, and what a Sad time at this moment. God Please Help Us All. P.S. some of us want to live in the past, maybe because we lived in a safe environment, that maybe we thought was safe, and It brought us comfort, think Dr Grabow days, Yea I'm daff, but I speak the truth. Pay no mind to the man behind the curtain, He may be a bit drunk, and a bit nostalgic. I was 18 and working 100 hours a week. I remember when airliners had propellers.

Watching some of the old shows, I long for days of yesteryear… I know that it wasn’t all peaches and cream, but a slice between post WWII and the unrest that the 60’s brought on would be a nice place to camp out.

The 60s were pretty good in Texas. I didn't see my first hippy until 1968 and we really didn't have any trouble in Houston. We lived in a nice middle class neighborhood, played in the streets and stayed out until after dark. Then along came Dean Corll and Elmer Wayne Henley in the early 70s and the world changed.

One other mention of my doc that I forgot to include earlier. I thought it was mildly humorous. I told him I could no longer have red wine for supper as the diuretic effect caused me to get up three or four times at night to pee. His response? “Have it at lunch.” I mentioned previously my Dad's old Doctor. Pop believed one should always have an MD older then the patient. That doctor was so old he prescribed Cognac for Dad's angina. Seriously. “I want you to drink Cognac for your angina.” ”Cognac will help my angina?” ”No. But you won’t worry about it as much.”

Got a line of wicked storms passing north of us. None of the much-needed rain, but the accompanying wind has made the Stag and Sickle far more comfortable. Reading the textbook for a course I'll be teaching and enjoying a pipeful of Balkan Sobranie 759 match with my morning coffee

As a youngster I travelled with my Dad on his business. I would get the window seat so to watch the Pratt & Whitney Double Wasps fire up and I mean "FIRE". Flames shooting out the exhaust pipe. Billowing smoke. The roar of 18 cylinders. Very exciting for a five or six year old.

My first flight was when I was 10, a crop duster doing our rice asked my grandfather if he could give me a ride, he said yes and up I went, the country store down the road had a gas pump in front and instead of gravel it was literally filled with soda pop caps, he landed the plane on the highway in front of the store, powered down so I could hear him, he shouted, get me a beer, I unbuckled, hopped out and told Mr T-Neg the owner he wants a beer, got one and went to the plane pop caps were binging and banging from the prop wash and jumped in, Blatz was the beer, easeing on the highway we took off. I still remember that ride, The pilot during Vietnam signed on to defoliate, that’s what killed him, Cancer.

When I was a kid Harris County was the most agricultural productive in the country. Had more horses and private watercraft than any other county too. This is an intersection in western Harris County in 1969, the year I graduated from high school. This is the same intersection now. Harris County is a mess of highways, shopping centers and subdivisions. Tell me it's better now. Oh yeah, we were all Democrats back then too.

I still get queasy thinking about servicing Lowes hazmat garbage. Sad to see one at that formerly a country crossroad…the neighborhood went downhill.

Stepped out the back door this morning and met a Prairie Rattlesnake, coiled, buzzing and pissed. First time I have seen one near the house in 25 years. Also the first time I had one coil and buzz at me. Probably the dog. She ran out behind me. So, I shot it. Good target practice with a Colt Commando and lead round nose. Close to a gas line, so aim was carefully applied. I do not enjoy killing these guys but too close to the house, dog, cats, me, Cassandra. Since it was already agitated, relocating was not something I felt confident about. Need a pair of snake tongs

They were advertised as wolves. The county had a bounty on WOLVES, not coyotes and the guy made a couple of thousand dollars over 2 years. As far as I ever heard growing up there we had no coyotes. Could be a terminology thing, but I've seen coyotes around here and they definitely look different from these. More info : houstorian.wordpress.com/2007/03/20/wolf-corner/
