Amphora Special Reserve Black Cavendish in a MM Pony Express. This hobby never ceases to surprise me. For weeks now, I wondered what I was going to do with this particular blend. At first, I thought it was dreadfully boring. But on a day like this, it really hits the spot. There's some great comfort in just being able to puff like a train, and produce prodigious volumes of smoke, without it biting me back. So velvety smooth ... Mac Baren managed to reproduce the recipe I remember when I was smoking it extensively during the 1990s. It was one of my best favorites. But the last 3 pouches I opened, a few months back, was a bit of a shock. I realized that the tobacco composition and aroma were significantly changed. I hope this was only an isolated incident. I can't say for certain, but if it has indeed changed, it almost certainly wouldn't be the first time: www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/2588/mac-baren-amphora-black-cavendish-special-reserve<Sort by Newest-to-Oldest> In the oldest reviews, back in 2003, you can see, for example, the Room Note change rapidly over the next couple of years, from "extra strong", through "tolerable", to "very pleasant" - far too wide of a swing for mere personal tastes, in my estimation. That one example caught my eye; there are others for sure. I've seen this in other places on tobaccoreviews.com. It seems like tobacco blends, even more than wines, are whimsical over time.

A few bowls of Watch City Old Dominion Slices in the MM Let Freedom Ring 5th Ave with dark orange swirl Forever stem while out transplanting tomatoes into beds. A storm came through and got a break from the heat, so I'm eating dinner real quick and heading back out to get at least another row done.
Going to smoke a bowl of Watch City 2021 Rouxgaroux in a Roswitha Anderson sandblasted apple after I wrap up dinner and the current Watch City Old Dominion Slices.

Indeed, when manufacturers change, it doesn't always remain the same, for various reasons. An anecdote is that when it was announced that Murray & Sons was taking over production of the Dunhill tobaccos, the diehard fans feared for the worse. And yet, how many times did I read that Murray's production was better than STG's? Personally I have noticed a lot of inconsistency in the Murray's Dunhills which I did not observe with STG. So it's all a matter of personal perceptions, isn't it? In Amphora's case, Douwe Egberts owned and produced the brand until sometime in the 1990s. They had a good variety available. Then, if I don't mistake, Imperial Tobacco took over production until 2006, when Mac Baren took over (eventually owning the brand in 2016, if memory serves). Imperial Tobacco's production was so - so, at leasst to me, and I find that Mac Baren, without sounding senile, did a fairly good job at being much closer to the DE production.

I think that there are so many variables in the process, it is hard to please everyone…especially when the crops from year to year can change. The weather can change food crops from year to year, I reckon that the leaf is subject to the same inconsistencies.

Probably nobody but me was familar with all the Dunnie originals from mid-60s, at least those with varying amts of latakia. According to late John Loring...what happened was that when Murrays took over in early '70s, they substituded between 1/4 to 1/2oz black cavendish for the Cypress (sp) latakia cause it was cheaper & retail prices the same. According to Loring, nuttin' more than Capitalist GREED!
I found the Murrays versions to be close but over time, added some more lat to try & even it out.

Decided to try another current iteration of a tobacco I used to smoke in the '80s and haven't had since- Edgeworth Ready Rubbed (I have the Sutliff match version) Smoking it in a MM Apple Diplomat. I am sure my memory and taste buds have degraded since then, but this was totally familiar and a great smoke. I have noticed the urge to smoke some WC Deluxe Crumb Cut while smoking the RR match

Started with Big 'n' Burley in the Mark Twain cob with 14k gold filled band and orange/black Forever stem. Will be outside all day and likely finish up the last few bowls of Watch City Old Dominion Flake and smoke a few bowls of Rouxgaroux as well.
