Just back yesterday evening, and have been down in Indianapolis at the Methodist hospital for my grandmother's major oral surgery. She never smoked once in her life, and never drank alcohol and yet she was starting to get a bunch of carcinoma in situ growing around her cheek and gums. They had to do extensive removal and some skin transplants into her gum and cheek and sew the veins together from the live skin transplant under microscope with fibers smaller than human hair. She's recovering but it's been a very stressful week to say the least. 7.5 hour surgery under anesthesia and sleeping in ICU recliner chairs. She's going to be in the hospital for five or six days and can't even drink water for at least 2-3 weeks. I managed to get in a pipe of Warped Saint Espresso in a 1970 Dr Grabow Grand Duke lovat while there.
This morning with my coffee I've got some Sutliff Uno in my old Leonessa Briosa rusticated apple.
Best wishes to your grandmother, Zach.

These look more or less identical to the ones I have. I've been rather impressed. They don't prevent 100% of ash, but they certainly absorb a very great deal of moisture, to the point that *none* collects in the mouthpiece that I've detected. Savinelli also uses balsa wood filters, though their 6mm design is a simple triangle. I don't have a practical basis for comparison, but this more complex shape intuitively leads me to believe it has greater surface area exposed to the smoke. Whether or not the difference is detectible is still up for debate. I've seen it said here that balsa filters absorb "70%" of the nicotine in the smoke. After my experience with Old Joe Krantz last night, I'm skeptical, because it *still* hit with a solid dose. It's possible this is a function of being more willing to hold more of the smoke in my mouth and nose for longer duration, though. With the filter, I gladly took bigger sips and more, longer retrohales, than without.
Not accurate and not possible. Filters can at best absorb a few milligrams of total moisture content from a smoke, of which it is likely only grabbing a very minute fraction of nitrosonornicotine and nicotine derivatives of the alkaloid content. The majority of what's caught in a pipe filter is simply moisture and combustion tars. If 3 grams of tobacco stuffed into a pipe contain an approximation of say 10mg of nicotine and metabolites, the filter is likely barely grabbing 1mg or less of this content while catching mostly combustion moisture on the surface area.
The Savinelli filters mostly just absorb water. I have dried them out and reused them up to 10 times.

I am FINALLY craving Penzance that I put up almost 5 years ago and I am at my business both pipe and tobaccoless. I am not sure where this Eso will go when I settle in at the house, but it has a match in its future. I wonder if after all this time it thought it was safe?

That's very much more in keeping with my own experience. It certainly *does* absorb considerable moisture, and since nicotine is water-soluble, it's reasonable to assume it captures a non-zero quantity of it; 70% strikes me as marketing hyperbole.

I am smoking a mixture of 3 parts Heine's Blend to 1 part Crooner with just a slight touch of extra deer tongue added in a Big Ben gourd calabash. It's deer tongue and burley heaven.

For lunch, I've decided to revisit the Old Joe Krantz / Amphora Special Reserve Black Cavendish in the MM Legend Straight Rob Roy cob, with Aldo Velani balsa wood filter. I took very great care to ensure equal proportions and good mixing - even having to dump the bowl on the first try and start over since I could tell it wasn't quite right.
This is easily one of the richest, most luxuriant smokes I've ever had the pleasure of drinking. It hits all the right notes, and could quite possibly ruin me for much of my current stash.

Checking in to log my annual cobful of SG Grousemoor. I just mowed, so the yard smells nice and complements whatever these flavors are. It gets different every year, but I opened the tin in 2009 and should finish it ca. 2024. I'll need to score a replacement. So concludes Tales of Weird Tobacco for today. Hope grandma is recovering well, Zach.
