C&D Orion's Arrow in the Wednesday cob. Been sitting on the fence with this one Pete. The verdict is? Nice, tart spiciness from the Orientals. Not an everyday for me. Seem to enjoy it more during warmer months. I like Oak Alley more.

While shopping for garden plants and stuff, I had Bayou Morning and McConnell Ready Rubbed. Back home now, with a cigar and beer on the front porch.

Hello from Athens-Greece, we had rain last night but now sun returned with 63 'F. Cornell and Diehl Cordial in a Stanwell, double Greek coffee plus cool water beside me. David Souchet did a great job in his Poirot role. I bought the whole DVD collection. He was the definitive Hercule Poirot. But I must admit Kenneth Branagh did a great job in the role in "Death on the Nile" and "The Orient Express." They are fairly recent releases on Hulu.

What do you think about it? It was an interesting smoke. It had a fair bit of moisture in it that I could feel as I broke up the crumble cake. I loaded a fairly shallow pipe, about 1 1/4” depth. I let it sit for about an hour while I was doing other things. On lighting I was curious about both the taste and aroma. It had an incense and spice quality that was unusual and it did not remind me of anything I have had recently. I could taste the Perique for sure and the Katerini. It had a sharper taste than what I was expecting from reading a few reviews. I was expecting more of a stewed, plum, raisin profile, but didn’t get much of that. It was there, but the Periques were in the forefront. Latakia is certainly there as well. Right as I had my first puff and a whiff of the cloud of smoke, I got a weird tickle in my throat and could not stop coughing every few seconds for several minutes. I will have to watch for that next time. Straight Virginias will sometimes give me sneezing fits. Which sucks, because I love them. I hope this isn’t some similar reaction. Anyway, other than the coughing at the start, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Seemed to be on the medium to strong side for vitamin N. If you can’t get any, let me know and I can help you out.

I haven't smoked my big freehands in a while. So, it's Stokkebye Navy Flake in the Louisville Slugger. I'll be busy for the next couple hours.

Just enjoyed HH Old Dark Fired in a Peterson Dracula 87 apple. Tobacco dated from 2015. A great smoke, but I still prefer Irish Flake. Tomorrow I am going to light up some 2015 HH Bold Kentucky

SG 1792 Flake that I jarred in 2012 and opened for the first time yesterday. All of that time and it's still nearly dripping wet, Ball jars are fantastic inventions.

Just back yesterday evening, and have been down in Indianapolis at the Methodist hospital for my grandmother's major oral surgery. She never smoked once in her life, and never drank alcohol and yet she was starting to get a bunch of carcinoma in situ growing around her cheek and gums. They had to do extensive removal and some skin transplants into her gum and cheek and sew the veins together from the live skin transplant under microscope with fibers smaller than human hair. She's recovering but it's been a very stressful week to say the least. 7.5 hour surgery under anesthesia and sleeping in ICU recliner chairs. She's going to be in the hospital for five or six days and can't even drink water for at least 2-3 weeks. I managed to get in a pipe of Warped Saint Espresso in a 1970 Dr Grabow Grand Duke lovat while there.
This morning with my coffee I've got some Sutliff Uno in my old Leonessa Briosa rusticated apple.

These look more or less identical to the ones I have. I've been rather impressed. They don't prevent 100% of ash, but they certainly absorb a very great deal of moisture, to the point that *none* collects in the mouthpiece that I've detected. Savinelli also uses balsa wood filters, though their 6mm design is a simple triangle. I don't have a practical basis for comparison, but this more complex shape intuitively leads me to believe it has greater surface area exposed to the smoke. Whether or not the difference is detectible is still up for debate. I've seen it said here that balsa filters absorb "70%" of the nicotine in the smoke. After my experience with Old Joe Krantz last night, I'm skeptical, because it *still* hit with a solid dose. It's possible this is a function of being more willing to hold more of the smoke in my mouth and nose for longer duration, though. With the filter, I gladly took bigger sips and more, longer retrohales, than without.
Not accurate and not possible. Filters can at best absorb a few milligrams of total moisture content from a smoke, of which it is likely only grabbing a very minute fraction of nitrosonornicotine and nicotine derivatives of the alkaloid content. The majority of what's caught in a pipe filter is simply moisture and combustion tars. If 3 grams of tobacco stuffed into a pipe contain an approximation of say 10mg of nicotine and metabolites, the filter is likely barely grabbing 1mg or less of this content while catching mostly combustion moisture on the surface area.
