If the duty is not paid then it's destroyed. I learnt the hard way not to order pipes with tobacco because Customs destroys the entire package. Pay your darn taxes, Elric.
If you refuse to pay the import duty that you rightfully owe, you should feel fortunate that they only destroy the package. I'm sure Australia has much nastier laws about smuggling that they could have brought to bear.
You'd pay over $624 for a pound of tobacco? More fool you. Apart from the fact that I don't have a lazy $544 (On top of the $80 for the initial cost) to pay for duty from my disability pension, I refuse to pay such a contemptible tax. You have an unempathetic 'I'm right Jack bugger you' attitude. Nice bloke ........ not. May all your tobacco turn mouldy, and your pipes turn sour. So mote it be.

That sucks, elric . It happened to me too and I left it to get sent back. Thankfully smoking pipes refunded me the order when the tobacco came back to them. We don't even have the option to have an order RTS. At least you get your money back. Do you then reorder & try again?

Sorry about your situation, Elric...and don't give no mind to the sorry asses that give you a hard time about taxes that you shouldn't have to pay to begin with. Just the way it is.

I can see you paying your fair share of taxes due on imports, but I know for a fact that Australia customs is out of hand. Elric has no choice but to let the tobacco be disposed of, he loses the original cost he paid for the pound of tobacco. Elric, it’s not worth the risk of you taking another chance on ordering a pound from a retailer. If you receive a “ gift “ on or around your birthday or a holiday of 50gr. or less your not taxed. Other than that you need to purchase tobacco’s at a ridiculous price within Australia.

Those are the laws of the land. I don't enjoy paying my taxes and import duties, but it is my legal obligation to do so, and should I renege on my obligations, I expect to face serious consequences.
If you don't like Australia's import duties, take it up with your elected representatives, or leave. Don't wish evil on me because you owe more tax than you prefer.

Other than that you need to purchase tobacco’s at a ridiculous price within Australia. Thanks Pepesdad1. Yes, it is what it is. I only regret not thinking ahead & ordering more blending latakia. Many Aussies bagged me out when I first heard of the coming law changes, saying I was 'overreacting' & calling me 'paranoid'. At least I've got over 35lb cellared. As it's about 3-4 years worth, I'll have to stretch it out with homegrown. Lonecoyote, yes, I've paid more than my fair share of taxes & duty over my life. It's my intention to write to the Tax Commissioner to ask for an exemption. Then I'l write to my Federal MP & try my luck with them. No harm in trying. Not only are prices ridiculous, the range of choice is minimal. The only blends available are aromatics. Not an English/American blend to be found. Up until just a few weeks ago, most of my pound orders made it through. It normally took two weeks for an order to arrive. If Customs got it, it would take around 3 weeks for it to come up on tracking. What's of most concern is that this last time, I got the tracking notification that Customs has it just one week after ordering. This means that they found it almost immediately. They either have increased their staff dramatically, have detector dogs sniffing every parcel or new detection equipment. A couple from Brisbane who I've bought a few pipes from have been ordering 150g or under from the U.S. for many years. They said that their American contact had a 'special method' to pack the tins (I didn't use their contact because it was rather expensive - $120-$150aud for 3 x 50g tins). They said that they usually lost just one or two parcels to Customs every year. Their last 3 orders have all been intercepted. Giving it much thought, I'm hoping that we will still be able to import from O/S. If that's the case I'll order a pound of latakia when funds allow & just pay the cursed & contemptible duty. At least then I'll be able to mix it with homegrown Virginia & burley to make my own English/American blends.

Admin/mods; is there a block function here & how do I employ it before I tell Smellshisbutt what I'm really thinking?

Also sent another during the holidays.....no taxes were charged by Australian customs. That's a very kind offer Ted, thank you. My birthday just passed in May. Doh! My plan was to start ordering tins of various blends once I felt that I'd accumulated enough bulk. After figuring that at around six bowls a day, my stash would last 3-4 years, I never got to that point. So there's heaps of Va's, VaPers & English blends that I'd love to try; John Bull & Wild Atlantic are two OTCs that were on my list. As was Squadron Leader. (I'm growing Virginia this year & learning how to make perique) Hadn't heard that one could receive 50g 'gifts' duty free. What's the process; do you declare it as tobacco and as a gift? What if several friends also sent a 50g gift for ones birthday at the same time?

What if several friends also sent a 50g gift for ones birthday at the same time? Usually sent with a few days in between. Now during the holidays nothing is questioned. Missed your birthday this past May!!! I declare a gift and it’s contents of 50gr tobacco. Check if anything changed with your customs laws as far as gifts. You should pay no taxes on up to 50grams.

We don't even have the option to have an order RTS. At least you get your money back. Do you then reorder & try again? I didn't expect to get my money back. I never ordered again from USA. Instead, I did a competition on the Patch for the winner to receive the credit. As for the issue of paying taxes that, smellthehatfirst mentioned. I don't think it's a matter of not paying taxes that we owe... For example, when I ordered my tobacco from USA, it was just under £8 for 50g. In the UK it would be around £15 for 50g (most of that is tax). So when I ordered the tobacco, I was willing to pay the extra tax, which I thought would have been around £7 (or thereabouts). In fact, for one tin that got through the radar, I phoned the inland revenue to find out how I can pay the tax for it. However, when the tin arrived, I was asked to pay £250 to have the product released, which I didn't pay. The note said that if I didn't pay it they would send it back. So I had a choice - it wasn't tax avoidance. I made the choice not to pay what they charged - a choice that I was in my rights to take. I was willing to pay tax to bring a tin of tobacco from USA into UK prices, but not an extortionate amount like that. P.S. let's all chill out a bit...thank you.

I did add $10.00 more, but my order was going to be shipped via ups, and arrive on June 18th. I am going to be in California on that and the next two days, so I wanted to receive the order before then. That’s why I paid for priority shipping. Thank you Ted for looking out for me; much appreciated.

Really like the way the shank was finished and the stem in blue. The three knuckle bamboo shank puts everything together well on this pipe!!! May you enjoy for many years of smoking pleasure!
