My latest to be restored pipes arrived. Quite excited by them. - 1st a Weber Scoop, not sure of dating on it. 2nd is a Pre-1936 Kaywoodie. 3rd is a Lee from the 1940-1950's. 4th is a KBB Yello-Bole Imperial from between 1936 and 1955. That rusticated Yello Bole looks like a big boy from here. What's the total length on that sucker? It's 7" long with a 2" deep bowl. This will be a nice estate restore for someone once it's done.

Had a near panic moment, when I saw my stock of CH was running low:
10 Carter Hall pouches
Italian Estates:
Talamona Romano smooth bent Pot
Free Priority Mail shipping.
Thought the bulky CH would dictate UPS shipping, but they offered Priority and hooked me once again.

The classic American cigarette blends used a great heaping amount of Burley, with varying amounts of Orientals and Virginia depending on the brand. You can still taste the old American style in modern-day versions of the old "smoking mixtures" e.g. Prince Albert.
The UK and Canadian markets preferred blends that were almost straight Virginia, which is why brands like Export A or Dunhill still taste quite different from the American standard brands, even today.
Burley itself is a mutation spotted in a crop grown from Kentucky seed. Don't forget "expanded tobacco" During the 1800s, the two main families of cigarettes were born: American and Turkish. American was primarily Brightleaf and was used due to it's ease of inhalation from the acidity of the Flue-Cured leaf. Turkish cig's used Oriental leaf. By 1864, a mild and light varietal of air-cured Burley, known as White Burley, was developed and was suitable for inhalation/cigarettes as well. Even then, the Virginia remained the primary component around 60-70% and still is today. If you've got some links to information that says otherwise, I'd certainly be interested. Interesting. Always thought American cigarettes were Burley myself. But I'm no expert.

In all the excitement of the new camper I forgot about my new joiner. I have a supply of scrap hardwoods and need it to square some stuff up for glueing and onto the lathe. I'm working on some creations since I have the lathe running and can do more than make pipes with it.

Three packs of Salty Dog from P&C and three tins of SPC Wild Man from P&C in a separate order. I have been chasing Salty Dog for a while, and I took a break in the middle of a deposition to place my order, when I got the notice of it being in stock.

Last week a Brisbane couple sent me a couple of free estates with my order of two pipes. The husband has had several recent tobacco orders intercepted by Customs and is low on baccy so I posted him a couple of ounces of Buttered Rum that I've blended with an unknown blend that smells and tastes like espresso coffee and some seeds so he can start germinating now; Virginia, Golden Virginia & Burley.
Today I received a parcel out of the blue; a bent smooth Ronson Dublin, a bent smooth Danish Sovereign Plateaux with nice straight graining and a smooth Cameo Pot estate [Has a couple of tooth dents either side of mouthpiece that I'll have to learn how to fill] They all feel great in hand, especially the Ronson.
The Ronson has a few fills but is a seriously nice pipe with attractive grain & a gold/faux mother-of-pearl/gold ferrule. Has an impressively thick chamber wall. The Danish Sovereign has a very faint, shallow hairline crack that runs down a 1/3rd of the bowl [wouldn't have noticed if he hadn't told me] Is there anything I should be concerned about? I intend to break her in slowly. Any other precautions I need to take?

You've never had Carter Hall before? As a non-USA resident, I find it as much a part of my regular rotation as my other blends.

I have 100 blends in the bunker and never had Carter Hall. When I first started to smoke a pipe I think I got Captain Black Blue or Red and wasn't too impressed. Went to a shop and found Dunhill London Mixture and pretty much swore off old codger blends. That was 20 years ago. Now I'm older and wiser or so I tell my wife.
